Having read Orangette off and on for a few years, I was pretty sure I'd like this. I did, and while I went thru it quickly as we were going away, I think I will check it out of the library again to go over some of the recipes I want to try. A memoir with recipes is about as good as you can get in my mind.

Characters lack depth and it's pretty ridiculously un-PC, but the quality of the writing is excellent and it's hard to put down. Okay, it would probably be easier to put down if I wasn't white.

This is the first book in the "murder mystery/recipe books". It's fun light reading - your typical mystery series with the heroine who owns a bakery and solves crimes. The book is filled with recipes mentioned in the story - all of which sound amazing and don't seem difficult to make. I plan on reading the whole series, so you can tell I've enjoyed the book.

A classic epic fantasy series. One of the first I read in the genre, and one that comes highly recommended. Its a very standard fantasy plot - a slight variation on Tolkien. But it is very well written, and the characters are quite memorable. If you're new to the epic fantasy genre, this would be a good introduction. It doesn't provide much in the way of thought provoking or life changing material, but it's a good story, a fun read, and is quite engaging.

Throw Harry Potter, Narnia, and college angst in a pot. Add in violence, death, sex, and you've The Magicians. Liked that it doesn't dumb things down. Dislike that it seems like a few books in one.

A very quirky mystery where a Surinamer pimp lord in the red light district is found shot. The murder brigade is brought in and they do eventually solve the case but perhaps without seeing justice done. I wonder what this says about the author and his idea of justice and crime. Still very enjoyable with interesting characters.

Decided I needed to read more classics and not just "silly books" and this turned out to be a great one to pick up. Classic ghost-ish story and actually kind of creepy in its own right. I enjoyed reading the extensive introduction after having read the story so that I could understand some of the controversy that has surrounded this book. In a sentence: governess arrives to care for the most perfect children imaginable, but then begins to see "ghosts?" of a former governess and her lover who appear to be trying to lure the children into an unmentionable situation. So much is left up to your own conjecture, but it actually makes it creepier.
