I enjoy dragging down the average ratings of obscure Australian children's books.

Well, haven't read this series... my 11 year old daughter has read all 4 books (?) She highly recommends them. :-)

This is probably the best science fiction novel I have ever read. Peter Watts is a) brilliant and b) deeply disturbed. If you like sf and you had a messed up childhood, you will like this book.

This was a wonderful book, and will always hold a place in my heart. However, I just don't think that it deserves quite as much praise as it's received. There are certainly more entertaining poems for children, or at least they're a little less acid-induced.

Alternately hilarious and heart rending. It takes a lot of work (and pain) to be pretty.

A contender for the Great American Novel. They just don't write books like this anymore.

I got this book as a gift b/c I loved Traveling Mercies so much. Plan B is a little more political (rants about GW Bush) and also more pluralistic when it comes to spirituality. I certainly enjoyed this book but it hasn't moved me in the same way as Traveling Mercies Also note that the chapters seem less connected to one another than they did in Traveling Mercies, but then again it could be that I read it too many years ago to remember correctly. Lastly, I listed 2007 as the date I read this book, when in fact I'd started (and finished) it back in 2006. I hadn't recalled that I'd read the whole book, so last week I picked it up again. I suppose this demonstrates that either my memory or the book itself is not as solid as one would like.

This is juvenile literature, but still really good. It's an old ladies personal account of her childhood in hiding in The Netherlands during WW2. She wrote the book much later in life so I wondered while reading if some of her memories of hiding itself were influenced by what she learned about the war afterwards. But it seemed pretty basic and she didn't try to philosophize or put a spin on anything.
I forgot I finished this, don't come here enough lately, I seldom finish books these days, I just read them and start another! Anyway, I love love love her artwork, but her story was so beautiful and sad and really engaging. It really clears up any negative misconceptions about her motives for taking the kind of photographs that she took, and helped me understand really just how talented and brave she was. She was born with a silver spoon and a heart of gold, a combination that I personally love. That can be rare. I'm sorry that her life ended so soon and so tragically. Maybe death helped popularize her work, who knows, but I believe it would have been celebrated and been inspirational nonetheless.
