Perhaps all the stopping and starting impacted my opinion but I didn't see what all the fuss was about. It's an excellent book but not quite sure why it's on so many people's list of favorites.

Slightly Shady sees the start of the professional partnership between Lavinia Lake and Tobias March who make private and discreet enquiries for people. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others I've read by Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz), I'm afraid to say. What was most irritating was the repetition of "Bloody Hell" from both of the protagonists at any given opportunity. It was just a bit too much. That said, there were a few good laughs in the story, and while the development of the romance between Lavinia and Tobias was minimal, I'm certain that the other books featuring these characters will mark the progress they make. A good read, but not the best of Quick's writing.

These are books that have completely different plots, but feel the same. They're absorbing, emotional, and well written. You like the characters a lot. They don't take easy outs. They come close to destroying you while you're reading them, but most of them put you back together at the end. They're perfect plane or beach reading that doesn't make you feel like an idiot.

I think I read this book when I was fourteen or fifteen, and I loved it. I think it's a good transitional novel. It's not quite a children's story, but good for those young teen years.

michael chabon really knows how to create a world and I got drawn into this one, even though I found it the narrative a bit hard to follow and couldn't relate to the protagonist. very imaginative, creative, and sharp.
