I hovered between 3 and 4 stars on this one, and honestly, had I not seen the movie, it would have been four. Don't get me wrong, This was a freaking good book, with super-fast pacing that makes the book go by in an hour and a half or so. But some characters I truly did like better in the movie. Not Number Four (John), because he's a genuinely nice guy, which doesn't happen very often in books. Henri I love in the book and the movie equally. Sarah: I have to say, she was a bit more interesting in the movie. And she was the normal one in the movie! Hahahaha, but seriously. And you can totally tell that 'Pittacus Lore' (aka James Frey) is a guy, as no girl on Earth is quite as sappy as Sarah was a few times. Overall, still a likable character. Sam: Ah Sam, my absolute faaaavorite from the movie. Not just because he's played by Callan McAuliffe (Bryce from Flipped, and also born 3 months and 2 days before me. ;)). But because in the movie he's a bit more gutsy, not to mention a bit more 'real'. I think Lore could have developed his character a lot more. But hey, there's a sequel, so maybe in the power of Six. Number Six: Played by the lovely Teresa Palmer (Becky from The Sorcerer's Apprentice), she was tough, kick-butt, sarcastic, and AMAZING in the movie. In the book...kinda lukewarm. Again, I'd prolly like her a lot more if I hadn't seen the movie first. Don't get me wrong, from what little we see of her in the book, she still could be awesome. But not yet. Annnnnd, ready for the shocker? Mark: Yeah, he's a 'good guy' from about halfway on in this book. I liked it better when he decides to help--for Sarah--at the very end. He was like, 'I'm reversible! As soon as we hit page X, I'm good!'. Kay, characters aren't raincoats! I liked him a lot better in the movie. He doesn't hit the 'extreme jerk' to 'Sunday Choir Boy', he goes from 'Jerky guy' to 'Guy who really cares about Sarah (but we didn't realize how much until he ran into the Alien-infested school to save her'. I'm just saying. Overall, 3.809835678979038.9999999/5 stars. Cuz I really, really did like it.

This is an early work of Hauerwas' (early 80s) which draws heavily from the moral philosophy of Alisdair MacIntyre and the social ethics of John Howard Yoder. Here, he depicts the task of Christian ethics in terms of the particularity of the community of faith, moving away from foundationalst axioms/universals/etc. and toward a communal understanding of the "good" and the "true". While this certainly leaves the reader feeling quite uneasy, I can't help but resonate with Hauerwas' thoughts. He wants to say (and, I think, rightly so) that "goodness" is a contingent category. That is to say, we cannot understand goodness as an ideal set of right or wrong actions, positions, etc. that universally appeals to the consciences of all people. Instead, he argues that the Church is the community wherein right knowing and true goodness can exist, not by virtue of its superior rationality, but instead by virtue of its association with the Truth, that is Jesus. Goodness is not a category that makes sense outside of the Church's accordance with the Triune God manifest in the life of Christ. It is a relational, communal set of virtues. Readers may be frustrated by the lack of clear lines of argumentation, namely because this book is a presentation of his position rather than a thorough defence of it. As such, Hauerwas' emphasis on peaceableness as the governing virtue of the Church or the unsubstantiated appeals to narrative left me feeling like I really needed to sit down with him to hash out these ideas.

I'm really torn with this book. Some parts I'd like to give only 2 stars, but others were better and deserve at least 3 stars. The basic issue with this one is it's based on a first person shooter, and the author tried to keep it true to the game. I loved the Halo storyline, but the constant enter a room, shoot everyone/thing in sight, then move on, became very tiring. On the other hand, fans probably would have raised hell if it had not stayed true. The best parts of this book came from scenes not from the game. There are several side stories about other people (and even some of the Covenant). They added fresh content to the story, and better paced action scenes. I was more interested in these subplots than the main storyline. However, very few of these characters had anything resembling depth or unique personality. There were so many side characters, that all the names being thrown around blurred together. Besides the main side characters, I could not keep track of them. There were maybe six people (besides the Spartan) that I recognized their names on sight: four humans and two Covenant. But names were thrown around constantly. Some people were named and only in one scene. It was a literary slop bucket. And, worse, almost no one (including the names I consistently recognized) had any personality or quirks. Even though the banter was entertaining and authentic-military sounding, any line could have been said by anyone without sounding out of place. During the scenes from the Spartan's POV, the constant fight scenes were tiring and formulaic. Somehow, they slowed the pace. Action should be exciting, not bog the story down. There were so many constant fight scenes that several were begun and finished in a single paragraph, only to have another start on the next page. However, it is based on a first-person shooter, and that's how the game played. It was very true to that storyline. I admit I felt nostalgic reading lines I remembered from the first Halo. Many lines, mainly from Cortana but also some of the marines, came word for word from the game. It was fun remembering each of those scenes. The writing was done well. The author is a skilled writer. But having to stay true to the game hurt this book in most parts. I'm not sure what he could have changed, and still followed the original storyline. For what it is, this book fulfilled its role, and is well written. If this had been an original novel, and not been based on a game I enjoyed so much, I probably would have given this book 2 stars.
