Overview This is the second book in a trilogy (it features Carlos Fuentes - Alex’s brother, from Perfect Chemistry). As with Perfect Chemistry the narration switches between the hero and the heroine, but I have to say that Ms Elkeles’ writing has matured a lot since Perfect Chemistry. I love Perfect Chemistry, but this book seemed to be a much smoother read. I really enjoyed it: Kiara and Carlos are well drawn, interesting and likeable; there’s romantic tension, action, and comedy; the scenes in the book are imaginative and varied; the relationship between the two main characters actually develops and changes them. This book will suck you in and make you want to reread it before you’ve even turned the final the page. Synopsis Kiara isn’t as mixed up inside as Brittany was, but she’s just as interesting. She’s always been a tom boy (loose t-shirts and trainers, restores her vintage car, hiking in the afternoons etc), she’s growing up with shrink parents, she has a younger brother and a fun (male) best friend. Carlos is returning to America because he got into trouble back in Mexico. He’s initially crashing in Alex’s apartment, until a trumped up drug charge leads to him moving elsewhere (I’ll say no more, because if you haven’t seen the book trailer, this would be a major *spoiler*). He thinks Kiara - his new school ‘guide’ - is unattractive at first, and a know it all. He’s also heading nowhere fast; he sees no future outside of gang life. Through their relationship (disintegrating cookies, action movies and prom date), each begins to change, in subtle and rewarding ways - the best parts of them seem to come to the fore. I liked the fact that at the outset they were competitive (this felt like a subtle unconscious attraction being played out) and that gradually this turned into mutual respect and then admiration. Even with messed up, self-constricting characters, Ms Elkeles manages to provide a healthy, laudable model for romance. This account is realistic, hard edged and just plan awesome. (Two hands in the air for the double narration!) Is This Perfect Chemistry ‘The Remake’? Like in Perfect Chemistry, the hero struggles with gang affiliation and eventually backs out for the girl and a better, cleaner life. However, it’s clear from the outset that Carlos is a completely different boy to his brother, and his storyline reflects this difference. You don’t need to worry about repeat scenes or deja vu language usage. Random Facts The scene on the cover, it actually happens! (Which as we all know is almost never the case in YA fiction.) I have to say, this book had the best last line, it left me laughing out loud. It will leave you laughing out loud too, I guarantee. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever read a funnier last line. Conclusion This book is definitely a ‘must buy’. I cannot wait for the last brother’s book! I’m sure it will be just as wild, heart racing and sexy as both its predecessors.

Not surprisingly, Michelle Sagara gives us a moving and spell binding chapter in her Chronicles of Elantra series. Set mere days after the ending of the last book, this chapter focuses on the fief of Tiamaris and the mystery of 7 identical bodies that appear as well as the repercussions of the events in Cast in Chaos. Once again, Kaylin is put into a position in which she learns more about the beings in her world and her power. As a devoted reader, who wants more now :), it is frustrating to learn about her world alongside Kaylin. But it is well worth the wait. Each book seems to focus on key members of Elantra's society and this is the long awaited Dragon book. I won't say much because part of the addiction of Sagara's books is learning about each new race, but what I will say is that I hope she continues on with many more books!!! One of the things that I really appreciated about this book was at long last, the issue of Kaylin and Severn's relationship finally being addressed. Not in a satisfactory or lengthy manner by any means, but at least the elephant in the corner has finally been named and somewhat talked about. Some of the complaints I have read said that it was not enough, but in my mind it was. Part of Kaylin's appeal is that she is a *young* woman, finally realizing and embracing her adulthood. I know that I sometimes get a little frustrated with how her coworkers, friends and allies all seem to treat her as a child. Part of Kaylin's growing up process has been to step out of this role, this comfort zone, and take responsibility and action where she is needed. And in each subsequent book, we see more and more of this. This book also, Finally!, gives Kaylin help with this in the addition of a new character who is amazed at Kaylin's treatment by everyone else and who I think, in future, will be challenging their preconceptions of Kaylin. We have also slowly learned about her past, the trauma that she suffered as a child, and how that has directly impacted her ability to want or need a deeper relationship with anyone but Severn more specifically. And in that lays Severn's appeal, that he has her back for however long she needs, even if she doesn't desire more. He loves her and that doesn't necessarily mean that he needs her to love him back. I wished, like I wish for in every book, more of Severn but his presence is strong and vital where ever he appears. Another complaint that I've heard is that these books are in present tense. Well, that is why I love them. We will watch untold hours of TV series, all in present tense. We don't know what is going on, what has gone on, unless it's revealed. Ms. Sagara has mentioned on her blog that this is her intent for this series. To make it serial but with over reaching arches. She has succeeded. This has become my favorite "series". While it is only "on" once a year, I tune in and read with anxious and barely contained excitement. Ms. Sagara also successfully does a "to be continued" at the end of each book that makes me immediately want the next! She always wraps each story with a very emotional and compelling ending, but there's always that last bit that leaves me anxiously hunting down the publication date of the next book. Thank you Ms. Sagara for once again providing me with a must read, right now. This is a book/series that I will stop everything to read :)
