Of Mice and Men was a book I was assigned to read in English class. I don’t usually like reading books written a long time ago, they don’t seem interesting. But I really like this book. There were a lot of interesting characters; none of their personalites were alike. I also liked how John Steinbeck used characters to symbolize different things. The setting is good too. I like how he used details he described it really well. George and Lennie are the main characters in Of Mice and Men. George and Lennie are really close but really different. Like other characters they have their own personality. Slim is the guy everyone likes. Curley is mean; he doesn’t like anyone who goes near his wife. Curley’s wife starts trouble. She walks around talking to the men on the ranch because she doesn’t have anything to do. George is over protective, the hard guy. He protects Lennie from people like Curley. Lennie is the dumb one. Easily distracted, gets into a lot of trouble when he doesn’t even know it. Some characters in this book represent different things going on in that time period. Curley’s wife represents all the women. Women than were allowed to do a few things stay home, cook, clean, and take care of the husband and kids. But she didn’t do that. She frustrated Curley by walking around the ranch, talking to the other guys. Then there is Crooks. He is the African American stable buck. He represents African Americans. Even after slavery people like Crooks were still treated bad. He had to sleep in the barn with the horses by himself because he was black. The setting is a very important part of the book. It sets the scene, sometimes even the mood. I don’t like books when the setting is a while back; I prefer them to be written before at least 1970. But I could honestly make an exception for Of Mice and Men. John Steinbeck did a good job describing the setting. He used a lot of details and it made the book a lot better. It was like you were in there. Some books you can see something if you knew what they were saying, but since it was in the 1920’s its hard to imagine what it looked like. Overall I really liked Of Mice and Men. The characters were all different. They had their own qualities that made them, them. John Steinbeck also used he characters to symbolize other things, like what it was like for women and African Americans. To bring it all together he did a good job describing setting. At first I didn’t think I would like the book, I really did.

At least this book had more dialogue and actual conversation than those three word sentences we usually read in Parker. There's still no excitement or curiosity to keep you reading, it's just ho hum another day of Spencer and I feel thats how he portrays Spencer, nothing bothers him or excites him, it's like having taken a pill to just keep you steady.

Homage to Catalonia is the best memoir I've ever read. I knew basically nothing about the Spanish civil war, but Orwell really sorts it out. The world Orwell delivers, pre WWII Spain, then England at the very end, is far more foreign to me than the one he gives us in 1984. It bogs down a bit in the alphabet soup of organizations fighting each other, but I'd give this book the highest possible rating if only for his amazing description of what it feels like to be shot through the neck. As a note, the forward in the version I read was written by a blowhard of epic proportions.

I wanted to give this 4 stars, but it stayed with me and made such an impression, that I changed it to reflect its power. Alexie's talent in portraying the rich complexities of modern Native-American life on the reservation make this a powerful read. This is a collection of short stories that are all inter-related to give the reader the image of a community torn apart by alcoholism, stripped of its social purpose, holding onto its past while assimilating the culture that has oppressed its people for centuries. It is poignant, troubling but tinged with hope. This is a fantastic read and truly makes you question what you've learned in history, postcolonialism, and authority.

Neil Gaiman has a great sense of tragical comedy. This is one of the most entertaining pieces of modern fantasy I've ever read. The character of Richard is easy to like and understand. You evolve as he evolves.

I like it but there is too much suspense for me, and too much details on certain events....

Excellent writing, facsinating, page-turner, tragic and strange, one of the best books I've read.

I was really unsure of this book, because these have not been my favorite characters from the series. But, when the big moment arrives, and you find yourself tearing up even though you're in public reading, well....that's a good sign. The book did pick up and had some good action in it. I don't know how much longer I can go on with this series, but then again, I also can't help myself.

A dark part in French History that should not be forgotten. I enjoyed and didn't want it to end.
