Everaldo Pereira everaldopereirarosa — Homage to Catalonia is the best memoir I've ever read. I knew basically nothing about the Spanish civil war, but Orwell really sorts it out. The world Orwell delivers, pre WWII Spain, then England at the very end, is far more foreign to me than the one he gives us in 1984. It bogs down a bit in the alphabet soup of organizations fighting each other, but I'd give this book the highest possible rating if only for his amazing description of what it feels like to be shot through the neck. As a note, the forward in the version I read was written by a blowhard of epic proportions.

Lewis Hill _ewis_ill_esign — I had a difficult time getting into this book -- the first several chapters took me weeks to finish -- but by the end I was engrossed and finished the final 2/3 of the book in a day. The end of the book also helped somewhat to resolve my major complaint with the book, which was that the relationship between the Judge and Finn was not sufficiently fleshed out. I still think that the story needed more explanation of the roots of Finn's brutality. His relationship with his father was the obvious source, and his need for love and approval would be good fodder for an armchair therapist, but I didn't feel that the relationship alone explained the degree of his capacity for depravity. That complaint aside, the author is able to weave the threads of this tale rather seamlessly into the fabric of Twain's Huck Finn. That achievement alone made the book worthwhile, but I also enjoyed much more.
