Loehfelm does a nice job of developing his protagonist here, who is a much more believable witness-turned-investigator than is typical of the genre. How heartening is it to see a writer who will actually let his lead do reasonable things like involve the police, rather than letting her be ridiculous for the sake of the plot? The mystery ends up being a bit thin, but between this and his debut (Fresh Kills) Loehfelm's an author to watch.

I was equally impressed with this book as I was with its prequel. The Inkheart Trilogy is a great triolgy to read.

The secret to this book is that you must be a complete and utter douchebag to find any meaning in it. The idea that the universe conspires to give you what you want if you visualize it is ridiculous and vapid. Work hard, set goals, and plan ahead if you want to achieve something. I'm currently "visualizing" people using their fucking brains and deciding not to purchase this trash. If you like this book, kill yourself.

After 150 pages I think I'm about ready to give up on this. I agree with Misfit, the dialogue and character interactions don't fit with the time frame the book is set in, and the writing as a whole felt clunky and awkward to read. So far I couldn't care less about any of the characters, the females in particular have been making me cringe with their constant fearful trembling and sobbing fits, plus the villains are total cardboard cut-outs. If you're looking for Scottish historical fiction, I highly recommend trying Dorothy Dunnett's 'The Game of Kings' and giving this a miss.

The only thing I can think to say about WB Yeats is that, despite the controversy that has enshrouded him for almost a century, he is not "one of those poets you either love or hate." If I were to read this collection from cover to cover (exhaustive annotations included. I won't ever do this, by the way), it's likely that I would come out really ambivalent. In fact, you don't even need to read the fucking book. Just take a really good Anglo-Irish Lit. class and the lectures on Yeats's life can't avoid the fact that he turned into a crotchety old man. Much like Wordsworth, Yeats turned into a real bastard. The youth and occasional naiveté he embraced in his early work (and probably his most immediately mellifluous) was an object of so much contempt in his later life. It was for a very real reason. His "mistake" (in the spirit of my irresolute opinion of the man, I only call it a mistake when I'm in a bad mood) was that the things that made him write were the things of political life. If you know anything about Ireland in the early 20th Century, you know it was a political and militaristic disaster, an everyday torrent of explosions and gunfire and homemade bombs and shit. Over the years, Yeats began to feel almost responsible for the political strife that continued to plague his beloved country. Having one of the most remarkable bodies of work in the English language and, yes, probably inspiring a lot of people to make irresponsible choices in the defense of their Ireland disenchanted him. The man speaking in his poems suffers, but his poems don't. It's just a matter of taste, but one that doesn't have to be acquired through such a comprehensive collection. If you're not an Anglo-Irish nut like I am, I suggest you opt for the Collected Poems edited by Richard Finneran.

An amazing story. I couldn't put it down. I want to move to Newfoundland now. When 38 jetliners bound for the US were forcd to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11th the citizens of this communinity rallied together to care for thousands of stranded and very disturbed travelers. There was no stone unturned as they showed compassion and caring like nothing I have ever read about. I have never read a book about 9-11 because even ten years later I just didn't want to. I thought I had heard it all, I hadn't. These people were just amazing what they provided for these people from over 40 countries and many languages spoken. True compassion has no boundaries I suppose. They cared for the animals, bought and donated toys for the many children and even furnished a kitchen for an orthox Jewish passenger. Each time you think "Wow!" it is topped by a better story. An amazing book and I will never again say a bad word against a Canadian (not that I ever did). It gives you hope that there are a lot of good people out there willing to sacrifice anything for another person. The thing is, these people weren't sacrificing, it's just the way they are. I know I started this review with "an amazing story," but it was. A must read.

Post modern narrative a la greque. Translated into English by one of the best. Check out the interweaving of different close third narrative perspectives, the splitting of self, the war, the suppression of the woman, the problem of communism...

this book is extremely dense, but so interesting (for someone who is interested in this sort of stuff). i especially liked chapter 2, "the phantom state," which talks about the underground government, schools, and health care systems that were set up.
