Inaam Al-dulaimi nnaoshaldu6703 — An amazing story. I couldn't put it down. I want to move to Newfoundland now. When 38 jetliners bound for the US were forcd to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11th the citizens of this communinity rallied together to care for thousands of stranded and very disturbed travelers. There was no stone unturned as they showed compassion and caring like nothing I have ever read about. I have never read a book about 9-11 because even ten years later I just didn't want to. I thought I had heard it all, I hadn't. These people were just amazing what they provided for these people from over 40 countries and many languages spoken. True compassion has no boundaries I suppose. They cared for the animals, bought and donated toys for the many children and even furnished a kitchen for an orthox Jewish passenger. Each time you think "Wow!" it is topped by a better story. An amazing book and I will never again say a bad word against a Canadian (not that I ever did). It gives you hope that there are a lot of good people out there willing to sacrifice anything for another person. The thing is, these people weren't sacrificing, it's just the way they are. I know I started this review with "an amazing story," but it was. A must read.

Duy Khang duykhangcule — This is a real touchstone book for me. I re-read it about once a year and it constantly reminds me to embrace life and its real purpose.

Alluri Sivaram allurisiva3282 — As I was making my way through this, I was considering how I would phrase my review. I thought that Odysseus came across as stone in some places, able to come across as un-impacted by things that would crush every human being I have ever met. About that time, one of his men actually accuses him of being made of wood. Even so, the book is exciting, and one is all the more touched when the hero does show emotion because of how stoic his default is. The translator doesn't exactly reach for the ceiling, to use a phrase of presidential speech writing. He is very straightforward in his phrasing and even incorporates modern clichés in a way that makes the language accessible, but somehow less inspiring.

Alessandra Castagnolo alessandracastagnolo — My ignorance about what is going on in other parts of the world was highlighted by this book. It is amazing to me that people can live through things like this, let along write about them. Still, the book left me, I don't know, wishing he had a better editor? I also found myself sort of critical of the whole corporate starbucks connection, and the political angle of unicef. I know, I know, they do good things. And Starbucks makes good coffee, I should just let it go.

Rick Karens rick_karens — I really wanted to love this book--the premise was so tragic and gothic, and the setting of coastal Ireland so lovely and sad, but ugh. By the end, I found myself skimming pages to see if ANYTHING was going to happen which might compel me to feel anything at all for any of the characters. I felt like I was reading an outline, albeit descriptive, of what the novel was supposed to be when it was actually written. The story, which should have been rife with emotion and character development that made the reader pine for Lucy, her parents, and the young men who set the series of events in motion, was more of a series of "here's what happened next..." explanations rather than captivating story-telling. Meh.
