White Teeth covers a lot of ground in its 448 pages-- a milieu of characters from interwoven generations, families, and cultures whose stories fly from Bangladesh to Jamaica to central Europe and back again to gritty North London. I loved the semi-chaos of the narrative; trying to fit the pieces together myself and discovering that Smith could connect the dots with much more flourish and humor. Since I lived in London, I especially enjoyed her lifelike city dialogues and her frequent place-name dropping. I felt like I was there. While I found the story completely entertaining, I didn’t enjoy Smith’s attempt to ground her uproarious tale with too many abridged philosophical insights on war, interracial marriage, love, history, drugs, immigration, heritage, religion, science, politics, colonialism, racism, education…the list continues. This combination of thin-sliced philosophy with topsy-turvy plot lines left me overwhelmed at times. But those shortcomings weren’t enough to keep me from enjoying and giggling my way through the book. Despite the occasional overzealousness of her debut, Smith is clearly talented, refreshingly unexpected, and always hilarious. I look forward to reading more of her work.

I agree with Carrie...I loved being able to vicariously 'delve' into the story of so long ago. The alternate raelitie during 1985 that requires the necessity for government speciality agencies so secret that not even their agents know everything. Tuesday Next is our protagonist. She is very smart and highly literate, bred in her bones as it were; her father is also in the sec ops but a different section with timely duties. Tuesday is SepcOp #27 in the Literary Detective Division of Special Operations. She investigates crimes against books Tuesday is looking for criminal mastermind (top 3 in England) Acheron Hades, who has stolen the original manuscript of Martin Chuzzlewit and killed one of the characters in it, thereby changing the story forever. Thursday and the Literatecs are trying to prevent him from getting inside Jane Eyre and committing further murders. Like the Extraordinary League of Gentlemen it fabulously skips, skims and scams through 'literature' of that generation. I would highly recommend re-reading Jane Eyre before commencing.

As I was making my way through this, I was considering how I would phrase my review. I thought that Odysseus came across as stone in some places, able to come across as un-impacted by things that would crush every human being I have ever met. About that time, one of his men actually accuses him of being made of wood. Even so, the book is exciting, and one is all the more touched when the hero does show emotion because of how stoic his default is. The translator doesn't exactly reach for the ceiling, to use a phrase of presidential speech writing. He is very straightforward in his phrasing and even incorporates modern clichés in a way that makes the language accessible, but somehow less inspiring.

This was the best historical fiction book I've read in a long time. It begins with the marriage of Holliday's parents, and moves quickly through his childhood to his dental practice in Texas and in Dodge City, KS. While in Dodge, Holliday looks into the death of a young man of mixed race, whose education he had encouraged. It ends with his decision to move to Arizona territory. Though Holliday is the focus, and Kate and the Earps also get quite a bit of coverage, what is most interesting is the backstories provided to so many side characters. Various ex-prostitutes, the Chinese laundry operator, a visiting priest, and local bigwigs all provide insights into many lives in the Old West. I found these stories to be even more engaging than the question of who killed John Horse Simmons, which is an interesting plot device on its own. Finally, there is the hunger for art in the middle of a wilderness. Holliday is a pianist and a lover of music, but has hardly anyone to talk to about great composers. He is a reader, and treasures his few novels by Dostoevsky, Dickens, and Virgil. Staying alive requires that he live in a place where good art can hardly ever be found. This greatly colors his relationship with Kate. In this version of events she is demanding and temperamental, but also the highly educated daughter of an ambassador to Mexico. She speaks several languages including Latin and Greek, and can quote from the classics. While this might not be an accurate history, it makes their relationship more poignant.

A good book for dog lovers. It tells the true story of 'Red Dog', although de Bernieres creates characters to fit into the story. It is a really lovely story and a quick, easy read. Full of pretty pictures too! I did feel a bit sorry for Red Dog's original owners though!
