A little to po-mo for my tastes. Not as haunting, rich or beautiful as The Last Life. But solid.

Favorite Quotes Anyone who knows me well must understand and be sympathetic to my genuine need to be my own greatest hero. It is not a flaw of character; it is a catastrophe. I had the need to be the good master, but definitely the master, no matter what the cost. It both surprised and angered me that {they} had reached a consensus of agreement against me. The way I looked at the world, enemies criticized and friends affirmed. …it was but one of the things that made friendship with me an ambivalent enterprise. I thought that I must always search for the remarkable combinations, add unknowns, mix things that were clearly marked with things beyond marking. I would leave the simulated test and enter into forbidden territory. I would look for that moment when I would begin to pour alone and in wonder. I would always try to seize that moment and to accept its challenge. I wanted to become the seeker, the aroused and passionate explorer, and it was better to go at it knowing nothing at all, always choosing the unmarked bottle, always choosing your own unproven method, armed with nothing faith and a belief in astonishment. And if by accident, I could make a volcano in a single test tube, then what could I do with all the strange magnificent elements of the world with its infinity of unknowns, with the swarm of man, with civilization, with language? Some things don’t mix. Some things don’t mix at all, but sometimes in life you have to take the risk.

Good book loved kate and curran is amusing but the f-ing upir offspring brought uncomfortable Nina memories. I despise chimeras. Still I'm pleased I finished reading it was worth it.

I enjoyed this books setting and plot. I thought that it was interesting that she chose to place it during a time of war, but this made the hardships between the couple in the story more understandable. The couple in general was in a way, exciting, for the fact that it was forbidden for them to be together.

Lord of Rage 3 Stars Synopsis Following the overthrow and murder of her parents, Princess Breena of Elden finds herself wandering in the woods, exhausted and starving, until she comes across a cottage offering warmth, food and a soft bed. Unbeknownst to Breena, the cottage is the refuge of three Ursan siblings and the oldest, Osborn, is, in fact, the dream warrior who haunts Breena's sleep. Now that Osborn has awakened her, Breena wants nothing more than the beserker warrior's legendary fighting skills to fulfill her need for revenge, or so she thinks... Review Not bad for my first Jill Monroe book and a definite improvement on the first book in the series. Breena is far more likeable than Jane in book #1 whose character would have been much improved if she had been knocked unconscious with a blunt object. In contrast, Breena is a proactive heroine with some kick-ass powers. The scenes in which she learns to fight are very entertaining. Like Nicolai in book #1, Osborn is also an alpha but can thankfully speak in complete sentences. His character is a captivating mix of ferocity and gentleness, honor and a willingness to do what is necessary to survive. The Blood Sorcerer plot has potential but is ultimately under-developed and poorly executed. There is no build up of tension and the villains are lacking in the menace department. Moreover, the timeline is confusing as the events in book #1 occur 20 years after the fall of Elden while this story is set a few days following the downfall. Nevertheless, there are several appealing aspects to the story such as the shared dreams, which form the foundation for Breena and Osborn's relationship and contribute to their chemistry, and the references to Goldilocks and the Three Bears (even though the actual romance is more reminiscent of Beauty & The Beast). In addition, the lore surrounding the Ursan warriors and their beserker natures is compelling and well integrated into the story. Unfortunately, the final confrontation is abrupt and the villain's demise anti-climactic. Moreover, the epilogue is superfluous (view spoiler). Well, on to the next installment which is Dayn's story written by Jessica Andersen, an author I am more familiar with.

** spoiler alert ** I can't even make my rant funny. If you don't want to read my diatribe, discontinue reading. This is your warning. While there are elements to this story that I do like, I'm greatly annoyed with two main points. Firstly, if you run a realty company and stuff has been stolen from the houses you are selling for TWO YEARS, why do you not have better security of the keys? The keys are on a board in alphabetical order in the middle of the office. Seriously? Even when women start to be murdered in the houses you are selling, you don't think to have your realtors at least sign out the keys? Also, I don't know if it is just in my dad's experience or if it is the way things are done, but the only time valuable stuff is kept in the houses is when the owners still live there or the owner has passed away. In the case of the owner still living there, they are the ones who have access to the keys and the realtors only show the houses when the owners are home. SECURE THE KEYS. Otherwise, this story is not believable to me. Secondly, the way African Americans are portrayed in this series makes me a little uncomfortable. The protagonist keeps pointing out the "blackness" of some of the secondary characters, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot, subplot, or red herrings. On one page she refers to a woman as "a black." Not even "a black person." Just "a black." On page 150, alone, there were references to Mackie standing out "like a chocolate drop on a wedding cake." Then, a paragraph down, "Mackie was always quiet in social settings, at least in one involving whites. For all I knew, he sang solo in the choir at the African Methodist Episcopal Church." While, in and of itself, these comments are not blatently racist, they're more like soft racism. What does it have to do with anything else in the story? Why are their comments like this peppered throughout the novel? Is she trying to show the segregation still inherent in the small-town South? If so, she does a horrible job at it. It reminds me of the ppl who start a statement with "I'm not a racist, but..." You can almost always count on their next statement being racist. Or the dude that says "I'm not a racist because there is a black guy I talk to at work." I'm just failing to see what Ms. Harris's point behind this is. And I hate Aurora's taste in men. Aurora whines about her relationships constantly. She's 30 and not married. gasp! Her life obviously can't begin until she has a ring on her finger. Maybe once she gets hitched she'll do something with her fictional life besides whining and sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. Travel or something. And the mystery is only meh, again. I knew who it was about half-way through the book. This is not your best writing, Charlaine. With that being said, a friend loaned these books to me and I'll continue to read them...but I won't go out of my way to spend any money on getting copies for myself. Call it stubborness or stupidity or morbid curiosity (my friend says stubborness), but I'll read at least one more in this bloody annoying atrocious series. Surely it will get better?

This may be my favorite book. I had no expectations when I bought it. I don't even know why I bought it. But I'm glad I did.
