A beautiful tale. Not condescending, not pointing the finger. Just explanatory and self pondering almost. I wish there were more books like this, as well written and poignant and yet it is also a great wish of mine and most humans I'm sure that such subject matter is never ever experienced again. What a truly wonderful book. Definitely worth buying a copy to re-read over passages in particular which I won't put here in an effort to encourage you to read it!

Gets a bit odd in the end, not like the movie. Entertaining

the first of the alex cross novels, i was very surprised by the characterization of cross. i guess there is a lot of development over time, but the cross that i was introduced to in mary, mary is only like this cross in a peripheral way - reminded me of bad fanfic. if you think trashy thrillers don't deal with the big issues, like race, this proves you wrong - this whole book is about race and interracial romance and the like. in fact, it beats you over the head with it. which - i didn't even realize cross was black in the other books i have read. you can't miss it in this one. especially taken into context with the rodney king riots happening the year before this was released, it just seems too heavy-handed. then again, it is a trashy thriller. but even the reveals were sort of lame. though it did make me want to watch the movie. hah.

I loved this simple yet complex memoir by the daughter of a Russian immigrant father and Orthodox mother, with their two children, moved to the backwaters of Tennessee to open a clothing store in 1920. Set during in a location and time dominated by the KKK, this compelling story is about adapting, accepting and finding happiness in the ordinary. It's a joy to read.

I was tempted to give this book five stars because I liked it that much, but I feel like I should save that high mark for literary masterpieces. This isn't a masterpiece, but it's such an interesting portrait of two brothers, with each chapter a snapshot of their lives from adolescence into adulthood. Maybe it's because they seem so real and so flawed. Apparently this book isn't very widely liked, so I don't know if I would recommend it to anybody, but I LOVED it!

This is a good quality, visually appealing recipe book. The three separate sections for starter/main/dessert are all easy to navigate and browse, as all the recipes are on a ring binder. Usually ring binder books are quite flimsy, but this one is very sturdy with a hard back cover and thick pages. I have no doubt that this book will withstand all the manhandling and sticky fingers that comes with cooking new recipes! The book itself is very eye catching, every recipe has a clear photo with it. I personally look for this in a recipe book, as I like to know if the end result looks as it should, and of course we eat with our eyes first! I also liked that the book felt quite interactive, all the different flip pages can make countless different menus and is quite different from any other recipes books I own. The is a very good variety of dishes, with different ranges of difficulty. For me the best section was the starters, as there were just so many tasty things to choose from. I should imagine that there is something that everyone would like in this book. Overall, I think I will be using this book regularly and it will be sitting at the front of the recipes shelf!

Hendrickson's book on McNamara weaves together five lives affected by the former Secretary of Defense's prosecution of the Vietnam War. This is a tremendous work, very knowledgeable on the war's dire specifics and suitable for a course in conjunction with other works such as TTTC, Home Before Morning, etc. Hendrickson made substantial use of the archives of the LBJ Library and Museum.

Great factoids, but the overall presentation is very disorganized. I also felt the book was slightly prejudiced at times. Finally, I know that infectious disesases are important, but I feel like maybe the author over-reached in thinking infectious diseases are behind everything that happened in human history (or at least it seemed like that was his claim).

I'd recommend this to fans of Brighton Rock, not just because it's partly set there but because of the seedy atmosphere and the wholly unlikeable cast of characters. Except, that is, for the wondeful Mr Bone, the schizophrenic anti-hero of the novel, bent on murdering the woman of his dreams - but only when he remembers to. It's an oddly touching novel, set in a cigarette hazed pre-war London and full of dialogue that sounds terribly old fashioned but obviously catches the mood of the times. As Keith Waterhouse said about it, "you can almost smell the gin." I would sell it to you but I ruined my copy coming in drunk after an all-night bender in Amsterdam which just seems rather appropriate...

Have you visited Washington DC recently? It's full of government buildings and museums. This book talks a lot about most of the museums and government buildings, as a souvenir guide to DC. I like the book. It explained most of the museums well and highlighted most of it's rich history too. Lots of cool pictures too!
