Bad book. Bad bad bad. I was so optimistic and then to find out that the reason Dracula is killing people is because he is a (SPOILER) big book lover and wants to save hard to find and out of print manuscripts. Oh, the disappointment of this book. I wanted a good vampire scare and I got a PBS commercial on the importance of reading. Save your time and read Interview with a Vampire

King's Dragon is more of a fantasy novel, a surprising departure from his popularity as a horror fiction writer. Taking place in a medieval kingdom, it employs familiar archetypes and motifs: a monarch in decline, sibling rivalry, an evil, menacing wizard, and of course, a dragon. That may sound bland to both fans and non-fans of the genre, but King doesn't disappoint. It's a tale with finely etched characters, of suspense and intrigue, and ultimately heroism and triumph. His merit as a writer is the subject of much divided criticism, but Dragon proves that King is still a master storyteller.

I think I was expecting something more from this book after I enjoyed The Pleasure of My Company so much. It was a lot dirtier for sure. The plots of these two Steve Martin books are very much alike but, for me, Shopgirls had a much less satisfying ending.

Beasley does a stellar job integrating (necessary) medical information without bogging down the story; in that sense it's a hybrid memoir-nonfiction work. She's never self-pitying, although I confess the details of juggling food, and recurring emergency medical visits, did become a bit ... overwhelming sometimes. Definitely recommended!

This is the best Picoult book I've read (5 in all). It's a compelling story that presents ethical and moral quandaries that few have thought of, but that are so incredibly intriguing. Beyond that, Picoult's research is impeccable (I can't even begin to imagine what researching this book involved), her characterizations are so beautifully and realistically drawn that you half expect to meet Sara, or Anna, or Kate walking down the street, and she deftly uses shifting first-person point of view while switching back and forth between present-day and past moments in the family's history -- something I doubt many authors could pull off at all, and surely not this well. More importantly, thought, this book doesn't seem at all formulaic (my complaints with some of her other books) and the author does well here what she does well in all of her books -- keeps you turning each page.
