This kind of post-apocalyptic "man vs. man" story has been told so many times before, I wasn't expecting much. But I was pleasantly surprised. The main character is well developed, unique, and interesting. The fact that the author chose to tell the story from her point of view made its strengths extend beyond the mere premise of the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next two.

Though the concepts in this book are old-hat to anyone who has been involved in the feminist movement for some time (at least, in the feminist circles I frequent), this is an excellent book for those less familiar with many of the sex-positive concepts of feminism. It was an enjoyable read even for someone to whom none of this is new information -- Valenti has a certain way of phrasing things that hits home.

An interesting ghost story told from the point of view of--you guessed it--the ghost. Helen has not been able to cross over into the light and is condemned to darkenss, unless she can attach herself to a human "host." She clings to her various hosts, who are all writers, until it is time to move on to the next one. Some of her hosts are famous literary figures, including Emily Dickinson (the title is taken from a Dickinson poem). After she falls in love with a kindred spirit (literally) named James, who has taken over a human body, she decides to possess a body herself so she can consummate her physical passion for James. The only problem is that she is now in the body of the daughter of fundamentalist Christian parents who scrutinize and control her every move. This story has some flaws--the fundamentalist Christian parents are one dimensional and the writing is occasionally unexceptional--but the story is fascinating and teens will love this supernatural love story.

" Dear Deer" is a wonderful way to explore homophones with children of all ages! In this cute and entertaining book, children are definitely able to pick up on homophones. In fact, you can definitely incorporate this as a small group activity where children are working together to pin-point the homophones or you can make it a large group activity where everyone is participating by snapping, clapping or standing up when they hear a homophone. This will definitely be in my classroom library, and I know it will get lots of good use in. :)

This is the story of an almost-veterinarian who travels with a 3rd-rate circus during the Great Depression, when the train moved everyone from town to town and ripping off the public was industry standard. For a first novel, Gruen's writing is surprisingly readable. Gruen frames the tale by having a 93-year-old man narrate it, one of the best parts of the story. Her treatment of the frustrations of aging and the caprice of memory is complex. But I definitely found the younger Jacob and his lady love to be a bit mediocre and predictable. I was hooked into the history of it all from the first chapter, despite the fact that I have never liked circuses and that the historically accurate picture of the animals' living conditions was horrifying. It is extremely plot-driven, however; if you've read it once, you've caught all there is to think on.
