Probably the only steinbeck that women actually get a role other than mother or prostitute. I love his writing, the christian overtones and the story kept me spellbound, feels like a quick read despite its overwhelming 500 and some pages! Delightful!

Seriously--the American Girls collections (and, well, the Molly Doll) made super curious about history. My daughters will read these books (oh yes they will.).

Jennifer Thompson was a senior in college planning to get married when the unthinkable happened. One evening a man broke into her apartment and raped her at knifepoint. Jennifer memorized his face and her quick thinking allowed her to escape. She was able to come up with a composite drawing with the police and later was able to pick out Ronald Cotton in a lineup. Her testimony put him away in jail for a life sentence. A later re-trial would give Ronald two life sentences. After eleven years Cotton was allowed to take a DNA test which cleared him. Under overwhelming evidence, the perpetrator eventually confessed. Two years later Jennifer met Ronald and forged a friendship. This may all seem like a great plot for a fiction book but this is an amazingly true story. Jennifer and Ronald come together to tell their sides of the story. Jennifer's account shows how frail eyewitness accounts can be. She was totally convinced she had the right man. The justice system unfortunately does have flaws and Jennifer and Ronald are aiming to fix some of them. Jennifer's account also shows how hard it is to find 'closure'. Even though the trial is done, there are appeals and appeals and it never goes away. This book is about faith and forgiveness. Ronald had faith he would be found innocent and his forgiveness of Jennifer is uplifting and touching. He does speak about his initial rage but he overcomes this and never loses hope. I was amazed by the forgiveness by Ronald. He is an unbelievable person. Both Ronald and Jennifer speak of being the victims of the perpetrator. Jennifer and Ronald show us all what human grace is all about.

I love Annie Proulx's writing and I also love books about the West and meditative works on the natural world. Add these likes with my passion for HGTV and this book seemed like a natural fit for me. Ms Proulx is a wonderful writer but I was not as enthralled with this book as I had expected. I would have liked more information on the process and decisions that led to the design of this massive house. I felt that much of the design for the house was based on snap decisions and not environmentally well thought out. I perhaps should be heartened that such a careful writer can be human when it comes to building a dream house. The book begins with a short genealogical discussion of the author's family. I wasn't taken with this part of the book. The real strength of the book is in the chapters where Ms Proulx observes and comments on the comings and goings of the avian population around Bird Cloud. Here the writing is compelling. The portion of the book dealing with the history and mismanagement of the cattle industry and the terrible toll recreational hunting took on the wildlife of the West during the early part of the Twentieth Century is also quite interesting. I didn't feel connected to the portions of the book where the author discusses construction mistakes and costly delays. Somehow I couldn't feel the author's connection to the actual home.

Read this with my womens book club - it wasn't one of my favorites. I struggled to feel more empathy for the main character of the novel, which was based on information that could be gathered from few sources and some conjecture of connecting some dots....and although I feel sympathy for women of that time period and the very limited choices available, I could not come to terms with all of the choices made by this women portrayed in the novel and how she justified them. An incredibly brilliant woman by all accounts - so the reasons given for her decisions didn't hold true for me...something seemed missing. Well, yes, much of the facts - but it seems like the writer missed something (this is her first novel)of depth here. On the other hand, sometimes brilliant people can be very selfish....there is a difference between smart people and wise people...so I don't know! Frank Lloyd Wright sure came off as a self-centered and brilliant architect who couldn't help thinking that his type has different rules in life than the average bear because he had so much to offer mankind with his "gifts". Made me want to reread The Fountainhead though.
