I have to see the movie with Natalie Wood, Elliott Gould, Dyan Cannon and Robert Culp sometime.

A fast, interesting read. If you like John Grisham, you should like this one.

I might be biased because of my deep and long-standing affection for Mr. Fry, but this is exactly the poetry book I needed-- it gives you nuts and bolts, form and stress and history, and he doesn't shy away from using the proper terminology. And the potshots he takes at free verse are wonderful -- particularly once he demonstrates that a lot of poetry one thinks of as formless is deeply rooted in standard poetic traditions. Definitely worth a look.

Amazingly juicy and scandalous as usual. Sadly there's only one more book in the original GG series. Such sadness. I feel as if Nate, Blair, and Serena have become my friends. Their stories and fun filled lives are such an escape from my own. Just as amazing as all the others, I will miss GG. Tear.

I know the reviews for this book swing wildly from dislike to love, often very few reviews sit in the middle. Most of the negative reviews are focused on the likability of the narrator being the voice of a 5 year old with at times a very advanced vocabulary and other times descending into a very childish manner. There also seems to be quite a bit of misplaced anger that this is a fictionalized version of what has happened to young women around the globe in a similar awful and seemingly unimaginable situation as we find in ROOM. I would point out that this is a work of fiction. The author took an event that happened in history, looked at from a different angel and wrote a story about it. While some would have preferred that view was from the primary victim's story instead we are presented the view from the other victim kept in that isolated space. I believe Donoghue does an above average job in presenting us Jack's world in a realistic fashion. I would say that readers perhaps make the mistake of trying to put themselves in Jack's shoes and finding they don't fit because they want to propel the storyline from an adult view instead of a very sheltered world view of a young 5 year old. I find myself unable to give this 5 stars simply because I felt the second half of the book was too rushed and would have liked to have seen Donoghue explore more in depth the changes from living in the ROOM to living outside.

The short stories are best; they are almost too perfectly concise and structured. The reader is kept in a delicate balance of awe and active sleuthing. Unlike what has been said of the film version, Watson is no comic character but the perfect foil to Sherlock's cold, inhuman exterior. W/o Watson, you wouldn't have a story unless it were Sherlock's stream of consciousness followed by boredom. Read a great article about how Doyle created Sherlock at exactly the perfect time in history - the age of science and technology was touching more lives than ever, and people were afraid of losing their sense of wonder. In walks Sherlock, who makes scuff marks interesting and scientific. I can see why this is required reading for school children.

Another great book! It started slowly, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It is a fictional piece based on a historical event that didn't occur. As a peace offering, an Indian Chief offered horses for white brides. In reality, we did not take this trade. This book is written as if the trade occurred, and describes what happened to the white women living with an Indian tribe.
