Jirok Song sojuck — Another great book! It started slowly, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It is a fictional piece based on a historical event that didn't occur. As a peace offering, an Indian Chief offered horses for white brides. In reality, we did not take this trade. This book is written as if the trade occurred, and describes what happened to the white women living with an Indian tribe.

odinkaja
Odink Aja odinkaja — What a beautifully depressing and delightfully hopeless story. If you're already depressed, or are susceptible to depression by reading an incredibly depressing story, this book isn't for you. It's an incredibly easy book to read. It took a few pages for me to get used to the style that the author uses. Once you've caught on, and should you decide to commit to such a downer-of-a-story, you might find yourself in the position I found myself in - midway through the book I couldn't put the book down. Love it or hate it, it's a powerful piece of depressing literature. Cormac McCarthy approaches the story with beautiful simplicity as he paints his words out upon the canvas. Each brushstroke carefully measured and calculated. His humble dialogue, almost a less-is-more approach, is sure to satisfy certain taste buds. The voice of the book is as much a character in the story as the story itself. One of my favorite lines from the book: "Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it." The authorship exhibits rich and beautiful textures that blossom from the pages. There exists a certain bitter tenderness to the story that sketches the most radiant shades of love, survival, and human emotion.

Marie-christine Larocque mlarocque6e38 — This is my second read through of this book. When I happened upon it originally, I went straight out and bought the second book, as is usually my habit. But I didn't read it until I had the third, because I'd already learned my lesson once before to never throw myself into a series unless I knew it was finished. Lucky thing I waited, because the third and final book took 8 years to arrive. So, I'm re-reading the first, and it's testimony to how good this is that I only took about 6 days to do it. Intricate and almost science fictiony in its world-building, The Chosen is basically your dramatic coming of age story, set in a complex, barbaric fantasy world where men who are like angels rule over and enslave all others through a combination of wealth, terror and tradition. Pinto's writing is lyrical, his his vision vaguely unsettling. He's a little like George Martin on the bad drugs - amazing and frightening and brilliant. The first book ends on a massive cliffhanger, and I'm not sure if the focus is going to switch from the Machiavellian politics of the Masters to the budding same-sex romance between the main character of the first book and what is likely to be a major character of the second, but either way, considering the cliffhanger ending, you might want to have book 2 immediately at hand.

alyssamallone
Alyssa Mallone alyssamallone — While this book has many of the same strengths as Myer's Fallen Angels, to which this is meant to be a sequel, I would strongly recommend this one for today's audiences. They do not need to be read in order or even both read, although the comparison between the Vietnam War and the Iraq War via the pair is pretty interesting. However, while the Vietnam War was possibly the first occurrence of this type of modern warfare wherein the invading Americans attempt to be human and protect the native peoples with rather mixed success, the Iraq War still speaks to what are troops are going through now in Iraq and other Middle Eastern counties. Myers is not only a good writer, fleshing out the characters primarily through extremely natural feeling dialog that occasionally deepens into something beautifully potent and keeping a feeling of action while still depicting the times of boredom and avoiding overwhelming the reader with either (on a random side note, whenever a book gets repetitively boring, my husband and I have started to refer to it as "camping" a la Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a term thankfully not needed for this book), but he speaks about what the soldiers are going through in a respectful but thoughtful way that manages to both question these wars, affirm the (noble?) motivations of those fighting them, and portray the native residents as real people worthy of respect. This piece is a rather wonderful investigation into how we are fighting wars and how we would like to fight wars that I would really encourage many Americans to read. The book has been marketed as a teen book and feels a little adult at first glance but while it would be just as engaging for adults, I think that Sunrise Over Fallujah really does speak to young men and women who are questioning what they want to do in life like Robin and hits at an important time for developing awareness of other peoples and places as well as how their country interacts with those people and places.
