We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead; And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? -- WB Yeats, “Easter 1916” At Swim, Two Boys has a distinguished lineage. Many Irish writers have dealt with the theme of Irish independence. O’Neill though is probably the first to link that theme to the fight for gay pride. In the very heart of the book, we find this dialogue: “Help make them a nation, if not once again, then once for all.” “What possible nation can you mean?” “Like all nations”, Scrotes answered, “a nation of the heart …The struggle is for the heart, for its claim to stand in the light and cast a shadow its own in the sun. Help these boys build a nation their own. Ransack the histories for clues to their past. Plunder the literatures for words they can speak. And should you encounter an ancient tribe whose customs, however dimly, cast light on their hearts, tell them that tale; and you shall name the unspeakable names of your kind, and in that naming, in each such telling, they will falter a step to the light. For only with pride may a man prosper. With pride, all things follow. Without he have pride he is a shadowy skulk whose season is night.” O’Neill ransacks and plunders. He transforms a struggle for national independence into a struggle for gay rights and gay pride. And in the telling, he creates a novel of terrible beauty which hopefully, hopefully, will help us falter a step to the light.

Princess Academy, by Shannon Hale, is an intriguing novel about a girl, named Miri, who lives on a mountain where they quarry stone. Miri doesn’t quarry stone because she thinks she is too small, but could there be other reasons? One day Miri’s village gets word that the prince is to choose his princess from the girls on this mountain. Miri and other girls attend a school where they learn how to be princesses. Along the way, even though she doesn’t quarry stone, Miri helps her village, makes new friends, and discovers new things. I think that the message is that sometimes being different is a good thing. This book was slow at first, but it picked up as it went along. After the first few chapters, I couldn’t stop reading. This book had great descriptions about the characters and the settings. Sometimes things would come too abruptly; such as Miri meeting the prince and then being kidnapped only a few pages later. This book was very well written, and I would recommend it to everyone who is looking for a good read.

I hated this book!!!! if u read this book you will become boring and old! this book pulls you into a wrinkled old time of so-called "action"!!! i could have found more action by going to a retirement home and watching the 900 year old people play bingo!!!!!! i of course was forced against my will to read this, otherwise, i wouldnt go spitting distance of it!!!! if you enjoyed this book (mr.flegar) then you are boring old!! do not read this thing! it's a plague! save yourselves!!!!!!!!

A very quick read written by the star of "The Death of Richie." It can go a little overboard in parts, but overall it was fun to read.

This book was lovely. Yolanda is such a great character. Despite her hardships in life and being out-of-the-norm and teased, it just makes her braver and stronger. The story is great! It really reminds you that sometimes younger people are right. Also that you should try to understand people: I really felt felt for Andrew! I'd really recommend this to pretty much anyone. It was a great book.

Having accidentally finished the one book I brought for the road trip (due to excessive delays at the airport), I had to make do with the one book not yet packed for Howard's move to Virginia. Haunted, written by the same guy who did Fight Club, is a layered read of an ongoing plot, character-defining poems and short stores- each of which supposedly originates with the plot's characters. A few of the short stories were quite good, similar to Neil Gaiman in surrealistic horror, but the majority of the work was simply shlock-shock gross-out horror lacking any sort of literary depth. Sexual deviancy, cannabalism, self-mutilation and torture are all spelled out for the reader in a way that doesn't allow the imagination to engage at all (which may have made it a more interesting piece). I did not like it at all.

Remedy is a fantasy medical novel set in the world of Aligare. For an introduction to the world and a description of the different races the author’s website is very useful www.heidicvlach.com. Peregrine is a long lived dragon like creature who has spent many years working as a miner. This has lead to damage to his hearing. To assist him as an aid he has adopted a family of short lived weasel like creatures called ferrin whose high pitched voice he can still hear. Tillian his adopted daughter has spent her young life as his constant companion. Pergerine decides to change his life and return to being a messenger flying between the different villages, he worries that Tillian is wasting her short life caring for him. When starting in this new trade a plague returns to the world affecting another race of beetle like creatures called Aemet. To help a young Aemet mage Rose who has been left to care for her sick villagers Peregrine and Tillian split with Tillian left to help the medic with her healing and Peregrine to transport messages and healing crystals across the land. During this separation they come to realise that each can grow in new ways with Tillian learning healing skills and Peregrine learning that he can cope without an interpreter. Rose develops into her gift as a healer. There are several other colourful characters with their own stories intertwined. Overall this was a charming story and I look forward to reading further works from this author.

I know that book is famed to be one of America's classics, but I just don't understand all the hype. It reads like a soap opera and none of the characters are admirable. What is so great about this book?
