Simple read intended for youth to better understand the plight of Refugees in the UK. It reminded me so much of the work I did at Refugee Action in "myth-busting" the stereotypes of Refugees. It also included Refugee Council in it quite a bit, which is an organization I just interviewed for. Woooo.

I chose to read Lolita as a way of enhancing "Reading Lolita in Tehran". As a psychotherapist who sees abused girls, I had difficulty witht the sympathetic portrayal of the perpetrator. Publication of this novel would have met a very different enviromnet today.

This is a great book if you are looking for a book about non-white boys in a realistic school setting. I thought it was very appropriate as a read aloud for my third graders. Some of the vocabulary was a bit challenging, but as a read aloud it was great.

Catching Fire is a good book for those who have read the first book, the Hunger Games, and enjoyed it. If you haven’t read it and don’t want to, I would recommend watching the movie or reading the summary on the internet. The movie is an okay substitute for the book because it follows the story pretty closely. It was a very good book and I highly recommend it. I loved this book because Katniss was part of a group in the arena. In the Hunger Games, Katniss was more of a loner or a party of two. In Catching Fire, she was part of the main group. My favorite aspect of the book was that the arena was designed like a clock. I thought it was very clever of Suzanne Collins. I also liked that Peetas and Katniss’ relationship got stronger. My favorite part in the first part of the book during the tour was when they went to District 11. Katniss showed a lot more depth to her character. There wasn’t a part in the book I didn’t enjoy. I would recommend this book to the people who know a lot about the first and like books with action, survival, and love. It was an amazing book. One that you can read more than once and still be entertained by every single time.

Frank Abagnale does a great job relating his story of conning his way across two continents as a pilot, a lawyer, a doctor, a professor, and an FBI agent.

I'm sitting here crying like a baby. My heart is literally broken. I can't explain why, obviously. If I did, I'd be ruining the book for those who haven't read it yet. But those of you who have, you know why. It's been a while since I've cried like this for fictional characters. I must say, it's bittersweet, this series. All that fighting...for nothing. Most of the time, I can agree with an author for writing things the way she did. But not this time. Things should have been said before the climatic downfall. Important things should have been said. I guess now all I have to hope for is book five. Hopefully, it gives me peace.

A gift from Deb Baker who knows of my interest in current China reading. This was a nice light quick read filling in some of the blanks of current day China in the central and less developed areas of the country. I enjoyed it very much.

There are two kinds of "disturbing" novels, the kind that splashes blood and depravity around for cheap shock value, and the other kind- a novel so delicately contstructed that the reader goes willingly into that dark night. And such is the case with this novel, A Blade Away. The journey, while disturbing, reads honest and true. The details maybe gruesome at times, but what other than horrendous acts of violence could give birth to a serial killer who doesn't even realize that's what he's become. Not to sound like a PSA, but serial killers are people too, though society often forgets that. Wallen has given us a complex bad-guy with deep battle scars and a warped sense of purpose. Serial Killers may not think like the average person, but they do think and feel just ilke the rest of us. Wallen is that good... I found myself both repulsed by and empathetic towards the twisted Doctor at the same time. In the other corner, battling against evil and a narrow-minded boy's club is Detective Jamie Davenport. Along with her unofficial partner Skip, Jamie is plunged headfirst into Louisville transgendered community. Whle battling a downright frigid work environment, her neglected libido and potentially complicated relationship issues, Jamie must track down the killer before another person falls victim - or before the Chief busts her back down to desk work. I've said before that the hallmark of a good book is two-fold: If you're tired the next morning from staying up late to read just one more chapter (and then another, and another) and if your mind revisits parts of the novel days, weeks, or even months later, like remembered reaility instead of a fictional account. A Blade Away had me on both counts. If Wallen can handle serial killers, the transgendered, cross-dressers and the suspense genre in such a creative, finely-tuned, and insightful way as he's done with A Blade Away, then I can't wait to read his other novels!

Holy S---. I did not expect this book to be THIS good. Lewis astounds me with his insight into the development of morality through our educational system. I have only finished the first third, and yet I can't help but feel that this book is expressing what I've been thinking but unable to express for the past couple of years. He dissects our educational system and talks about its effect on public morality (and Masculinity!). It's thick, but if you plan on teaching at any level, this book is essential. Please read it. If you disagree with Lewis' ideas, I want to talk with you about it.
