Grandma Weight had this book. It was the only children's book I remember reading at her house. I almost always read it every time we went there. I do not have the slightest clue how old it was but it must have bee old because of all the yellow pages.

After letting this book sit on my bookshelf for years, I finally picked up this book. I have to say, I'm really glad I did. Pi Patel is a God-loving boy and the son of a zookeeper. During his family's move to Canada, the ship that he is in sinks in the middle of the ocean and he is stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra, and a Bengal tiger. The rest of the book is about Pi's survival in this strange situation. There are two ways to read this book. The first is as a straight-forward, take-it-as-it-is story. If you read the book this way, then you are in for a unique, action filled, hard to believe novel. The second way to read this book is to focus on Pi and what the different animals represent. I suggest reading from the second point of view, which makes the book a lot more meaningful and thought provoking. The greatest part of this book is, depending on how you read it, you could have many different viewpoints and major themes. Themes can include religion, survival, story telling, territorial dominance, rituals, and so on and so forth. No one theme is correct, and that's the beauty of the novel. This is the type of book where it may actually be worth re-reading because there's so many different things to consider while reading it and so many "points of views," if you will, to read it from.
