I can't do it, I just can't finish the dang book. It's just not interesting enough. His writing reminds me of Thomas Hardy in the whole excessively wordy and boring sort of way. I think this book could have been more than cut in half and it would have been an interesting read that clipped along but when I have to force myself to read, I can't justify spending the time reading it. I liked Jack and that was about the only character I felt any emotion for, they just don't seem to exist other than on the page...

I read this book in two days so I obviously enjoyed it:) This is a gothic mystery set in Victorian England. Contance has inherted a large, dilapidated estate which holds a dark past of mysterious deaths and disappearances. In hopes of determining her true parentage Constance sets out to solve the puzzle even at the risk of her own life. I enjoyed the puzzle and solutions Harwood created regarding the seances and mysterious disappearances. He kept the suspense up and the reader guessing until the end. My only disappointment was that some of the characters are almost interchangeable in manor. He may have been wanting to show that there was a historical pattern repeating but for at least a couple of the characters there was so little difference to mark personalities that I wondered if characterization was an afterthought.

** spoiler alert ** A lot of what I liked about this book was to do with the historical events on which the story was based. In this day and age of flash mobs, twitter, facebook and nearly instantaneous dissemination of information, it's hard to imagine the WWII era media silence that kept the story of the Japanese balloon bomb attacks secret and then unknown for decades. The characters and setting of the story was also compelling as was the exploration of spirituality and the nature of guilt and atonement. My book group also liked the book and we had a great discussion about it.

Not sure what I make of this one yet....the perspectives provide a very conservative view of what constitutes the "right" values. For example this book complains that we are losing values by allowing the curriculum in schools when they start teaching about more contemporary texts rather than adhering to Shakespeare and To Kill a Mockingbird. Interesting but doesn't anyone else wonder if there aren't great contemporary writers that students could relate to and identify with current social issues today? I have been asking the questions as of late so I am doing some research.

Kit reminds me of myself. We both think pink is okay, but we're not crazy about it like most girls. I thought it was interesting how they used typewriters instead of computers. And I learned from this book that changes can be good. She gave me an idea to start writing newspapers for my family just like she did for her dad.

i read this in college for a class in 19th century history. very interesting. having just read "sex wars" and now reading a biography of victoria woodhull, i may just have to find my copy of "the lowell offering" and read it again.
