I wanted to hate this book more than I actually did. It is sentimental and predictable, but it finally won me over by pushing the envelope - for a kid's book at least. The subject matter gets tough, but the vocabulary never does. The writing is as simplistic as the plot. Kids apparently love it.

The second in the 'Inheritance' series ('Eragon' was the first), it continues the story of Eragon and his dragon Saphira as they learn what it is going to cst them to become the heroic 'Dragon Rider' of fame. Eragon succeeds in rescuing Arya, the mysterious elf who seems to be more than what she is letting on. After being welcomed by 'The Varden', a group of revolutionaries who are plotting to overthrow the wicked King Galbatorix, Eragon and Saphira have to battle the evil Urgal soldiers who try to destroy him, and all of the hopes of the Varden. Eragon is successful in battle, but realizes his limitations, and his need for more intense training if he is to battle Galbatorix. His trip to the elven city of Ellesmera, and the suprises that await him there are just a stepping stone to an epic battle that climaxes, and ends the book. The author grew considerably in storytelling with the second book - and has built an overwelming expectation for the third one.

I admit, I didn't really start to like this book until the halfway point. After that, I couldn't stop reading it. I loved Oskar and his interactions with the other characters throughout the book. Very emotional and moving.

I would give this 3.5 stars if I was able to and recommend listening to the audio book. Having never been a fan of Ernest Hemingway's work, I wasn't sure I would find this interesting, but it is very well written and covers a less well known part of his life. He met his first wife when he was 21 and ambitious, but unrecognized as the talent he later became. It is a story a lot of women can identify with. Hadley Hemingway is older than Ernest, but more naive and certainly unprepared to take her place in Paris society among the most powerful literary characters of that time period. She is delightful, however, and well-liked, probably moreso than her husband. It is a sad story of young, deep love which weakens over time. They have different goals in life, but like so many others, never discuss their differences. Having really only been acquainted with the older Hemingway who committed suicide, it was a pleasure meeting the younger, less depressed man. Throughout the novel, though, the man he becomes is glimpsed. It is frustrating watching Hadley, who, I feel, could have been a talent in her own right, lose herself to her husband's career and ambition.

A novelization of the real-life happening in Austria (the man who imprisoned the woman and her child for years).

The Blue Parakeet was fantastic. When reading the bible, *everyone* picks and chooses. It's called *discernment*. Unfortunately, too many of us look at what someone else discerns, compares it to what we discern, and condemns based on the different conclusions we've reached. While the book starts out a little difficult, but as you get into it, the reading is a lot clearer. Highly recommended.

This book was so beautifully written. I read the english translation of course so I can only imagine just how beautiful the original version must have been. It takes you to a different veiw.

After reading the mammoth Crimson Petal, I needed something a bit lighter to read. I want to say easy-going, but that’s not really the right word for these Frost books. I read the first in the series a while ago, and was keen to see what hijinks Mr Frost could get up to this time out. It’s more of the same, of course, Frost paired up with a younger partner who gets frustrated at his lacksadaisical ways but is ultimately impressed when the mysteries are solved. There’s something about the way Wingfield writes that really brings you into the story. Last time, I mentioned that although it was set in winter, the story made you feel warm and cosy and involved. This time, the pair are so overworked and tired, cases piling on them, and you just really feel it too. Maybe it’s just because I was feeling tired as well, though. Anyway, overall, I really enjoyed it. It felt, perhaps, slightly more serious in tone than the first book, but I’m still keen to read more.
