When I read The Colour of Magic, I wasn't particularly looking forward to it and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't the best thing I'd ever read but was entertaining enough. There are plenty more Pratchett works on the Life List reading list, but I thought if I was going to read book four, I should probably try and read the ones in between. I do love keeping things in order. Perhaps it was because I knew it didn't count towards the list, or perhaps it just showed up how I really feel about these books, but I wasn't as thrilled with this one. It was still interesting enough, I wasn't bored, but I can't say I was eager to keep on turning the pages either. When I got to the end I was quite happy it was over. I like the characters, I like the satire, I particularly like the Luggage, but it just didn't grab me as I might have hoped it would. Nothing specifically stands out to complain about, and I know these books are much-loved, but I suppose they are just not for me. With so much to read, perhaps I had better abandon my plan of consuming the works in order, and just pick out the ones that have made it onto the list.

This book still makes me cry, even though I have read it a million times. Whenever I feel alone or distant from God or unworthy to be called his child, this is the book I turn to. I don't know how many copies of this book I have given away as presents, none to children.

One of the absolute best books I have ever read. If ever there was a case for sticking to a book, even though it takes a while to "begin," this is it. Amazing. Truly, just amazing. I miss the characters already; I mourn for those who died as if I'd known them. The insensibility of war and the limitlessness of family--blood or not--remind me of our humanity at its core. Without trimmings and trappings and materialism, we are, all, just people. I'm so glad I picked this up and didn't let it go.

I liked this much better than RESPONSE by the same author. Here we go back and forth between two basketball star buddies from high school, one white and the other black, getting each POV with each chapter change. The premise lies with a crime gone wrong in the beginning where both are involved but only one (black) is implicated. By the time circumstances catch up to white, his dad has hired a fancy lawyer and his fate does not hang in the balance to the same extent. Thus, Volponi explores issues of race and justice along with friendship and sport. There's also the issue of silence and betrayal -- if it means saving your own ass, do you spill the beans on your friend? Some profanity keeps this book edgy for the middle school crowd, with one killer episode in the middle that seems gratuitous and covers a crazy man spewing hatred and filth on the subway. Why? It makes a "judgment call" for 8th grade classroom libraries all the dicier when it didn't have to be that way. Anyway, for reluctant readers and sports fans, a winner.

I read this a long time ago....still have a hardback copy of it. There were some lines it that I always loved...it's packed now; will have to remember to flip through it when I reshelve it... Anyhow, just saw that it's now a movie...would really like to see it. I'm terrible with author names and did not realize that he also wrote Wonder Boys. I did not read that book but thought the movie was excellent. I'm also going to mark to read his Pulitzer winning book...
