This book made me proud to be part of a capitalist country and at the same time, it made me worry. The issues of labor in the history of the United States are passed through the lens of the employers in this mongraph. Filled with corporate strategy and methods to appease or remove the power of unions, this book provides the context for some hardcore debate on labor.

It would be impossible to tell you the plot of "City of Thieves" without you cocking your head slightly to the side and saying, "Hmm? Really?" Benioff’s novel is pure grotesquerie that brings together comedy and tragedy, lawlessness and justice, war and friendship in a thrilling, unexpected, and incredibly fulfilling way. "City of Thieves" is the story of an unlikely friendship that develops during a rather strange journey through war-torn Leningrad. The two main characters, Lev and Kolya, are not searching for the golden fleece or the Holy Grail, but rather a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet commander who needs them for his daughter’s wedding cake. As Lev and Kolya search for the eggs, they find themselves in situations ranging from the horrific to the absurd. Despite the sometime inane situations and the proliferation of base humor (my, Benioff likes his poo jokes!), Lev and Kolya’s journey feels just as meaningful and epic as that of Odyssey or Aeneas. To Benioff’s credit, he has created a historical novel that feels both modern and classical; he is an unapologetic and savage storyteller, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

My 1st and 2nd grade teacher used to read us poems from this book all the time in class. It instantly became a favorite. My mom and I would read them also. I can still recite a bunch of poems by heart - and each time I hear one it brings back a plethora of memories.

This book was great to read cause it gave you all the background information you need to read the Chronicals of Narnia Book! It was pretty slow and there is a reason it never went to a movie but it did put alot of things in prospective for me!~

This book is disappointing in that it offers very little new information -- especially to those who frequently read articles and books on the topic of world Englishes.

The other reviews I read of this book had me a little nervous but I really liked it. It does have a slow start and I appreciated whoever wrote in their review to push through until page 100, so I urge anyone reading this review to do that as well. I am anxious to read the sequel!!

I'm halfway through this book. I'm not in love with the way its written -- it's dense and poorly organized. The information doesn't seem to be delivered in the linear fashion I want for a book thats meant to be read through and not just referenced. The preface even goes so far as to say "Read section 1, then section 3, then look back at section 2 and then read section 4 if you want". However --- The information itself is gold. This book really unlocks the mystery of how, when and why to use a template instead of traditional inheritance/virtual function. For that I am indebted to it.

I didn't agree with this 100% of the time. I do think that some discussions that involve more than two people are valuable and not just brainstorming. I do have meetings all the time, but most (!) of them are valuable in the current group I'm in. I have been in groups that suffer from exactly what this book is talking about. I'm not entirely convinced the "modern" meeting is a cure all though. I've asked a couple of people I know to also read it and give me opinions about how much of this should be applied.
