"City of Thieves" is the story of an unlikely friendship that develops during a rather strange journey through war-torn Leningrad. The two main characters, Lev and Kolya, are not searching for the golden fleece or the Holy Grail, but rather a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet commander who needs them for his daughter’s wedding cake. As Lev and Kolya search for the eggs, they find themselves in situations ranging from the horrific to the absurd. Despite the sometime inane situations and the proliferation of base humor (my, Benioff likes his poo jokes!), Lev and Kolya’s journey feels just as meaningful and epic as that of Odyssey or Aeneas. To Benioff’s credit, he has created a historical novel that feels both modern and classical; he is an unapologetic and savage storyteller, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

Adrian Demetrescu daemeh — Excellent nonsense, had me rolling on the floor! This is the first of Robert Rankin's books that I've read. It was recommended to me by my brother-in-law who said that Terry Pratchet's work was a poor copy of Rankin. I can see the similarity but can't say that I agree with him. A great read for anyone who has a sense of humour.
