I thought this book would be perfect for me. It was listed as a real-life legal drama in the courtroom and the Patent Office between a solo inventor against a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and huge American corporations. And, as I got into it, I appreciated that it was written as a PBS American Experience special would be narrated. By the end, though, I was less impressed. I have an engineering degree and am a patent attorney. I live patent law. This, I thought, oversimplified the legal aspects for someone who understands patent law, and likely would go right over the head of someone who doesn't. Same with the physics. Too simple for someone who understands basic quantum mechanics, but way too complex for someone who doesn't. I realize that sounds elitist, but I'm concerned recommending this book without such a foundation. If you take out the science and the law, 20% of the book is gone. I'll give an A for effort that the author tried to distill complex science and one of the most convoluted forms of American law down for the reader. I'm not sure I could do better. In fact, I'm not sure I always do better when dealing with clients. But some red flag should have gone up editing this book that, "Oh crap, this complexity could be a problem." And speaking of editing, the writing could be better. I hate picking on this book more, but, for example, the same two paragraphs are copied onto both page 196 and 197. It should have been one or the other. Overall, I was underwhelmed that such an interesting story got mired in the background material. My hopes were probably too high (so keep that in mind with my review), but I'd read something else. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a patent law courtroom drama, I have no idea what that something would be.

This was my first Danielle Steel novel and it started my collection. I cried all through it and my friends wondered why i couldn't put such a sad book down. It was worth every moment.

Awakened is the 8th book in the House Of Night series. And once more, Zoey, the Red Fledglings, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, are not safe from Neferet or Kalona. A lot is revealed about what is going on with Kalona and Neferet and it's shocking. The book was written very well and it seems that it is enhanced by the seperate conflicts that each character is dealing with. Although these books are targeted for a much younger population I have enjoyed it. The titles come out in a realitivly short time and keeps you looking forward to the next installment.

um, about as good as a tour guide book travel thingy can be? best served in conjunction w/ actual country studies. useful insights regarding where you do and don't belong (i think?) nice snap shot of things to do (i think?), but really disappointing that it doesn't hit upon radical historic shizzle like battlefields and such like. therefore i recommend finding the battlegrounds and keeps you wish to visit and then using this book to help scheme which places have other interesting stuff.

Sweet story, but a tad boring (and that's saying something for a book <100 pages).

You never forget this book. A view of East Indian life that seems grim and difficult. But the world is lush and colorful, and difficult to forget.

This was my bookclub's selection and the story centered around Nazi Germany during WWII as told by a present day mother and daughter through flashbacks to the mother's youth and a present day project by the daughter, now a doctor of German Studies at a local university. The project is to record a living history of this period through interviews with Germans who were neither Nazi nor Jew. After reading Sarah's Key (also with ths group) I was not happy that another Holocaust book was this month's selection as the images of the atrocities stay with me long after I close the book and this one is no different. I must report, however, the writing and the unfolding of both women's stories was very compelling and the 50 year aftermath of these years on both of them profoundly affecting. This was definitely a better written book than Sarah's Key.
