I really didn't like this book. Didn't even finish it. The author's attitude got to me too badly. She was pretty condescending, and constantly surprised that no one "could tell" that she had a PhD and was "overqualified" for the position of waitress, maid, etc. And, frankly, the idea of "pretending to be someone of the lower class" as a lark and to write a human-interest article says more about the class problems in this country than anything she actually wrote.

Well worth a read once, like The Time Machine, but I don't think I'll read it again. Gripping and easy to follow, though. If it hadn't been for Dr. Kemp, I wouldn't have liked a single character.

I picked this one up at a library book sale for a quarter. I'm not sure it was worth that much. Ugh. To be fair though, I had already experienced early Elizabeth Peters and wasn't thrilled, so it's not like I had high expectations. The plot was dated, the characters uninspiring, and I was kind of annoyed by the main character's continual references toward dark portents ahead. But-- it was short, quick, and I am able to take another book off my shelf.

I think this book was purely published because of who James Franco is. That said, i really couldn't put it down. I found it to be a really fast read, but the content lacked any depth. They're just stories about destructive teens. That's it. No substance, just entertainment; but un-affecting entertainment.

The novel is set during the one and only visit of Sigmund Freud to America. Apparently, for the rest of his life Freud referred to Americans as "savages" and spoke disparagingly of the US. It's a true historical mystery, because no one knows what may have happened while Freud was here that so soured the man on this country and its people... Loved the detailed description of 1909 New York, and the way some basic principles of psychoanalysis was explained - this is a well researched book!
