I loved this book. It's part cowboy story told in a very literary way, part comedy, part tragedy, part fable... I loved the story, and the characters, and also the writing style! Although Cormac McCarthy isn't the lightest read. I laughed AND cried. It's the first in a trilogy, but I haven't been able to get myself to finish the other two, because they were too painfully sad. "All the Pretty Horses" is more hopeful than the other two seem to be.

Basically talks about how climate influenced the migration and cultural evolution of man. An example would be the climate shift from moist/sufficient rainfall to dry/arid found in Northern Africa. Some tribes clung to the banks of the Nile. Most tribes migrated North to colder regions adopting heavier clothing, more frequent hunting leading to domestication of cattle and sheep and the cultivation of wheat and other grains. Some migrated farther south, looking for moister areas but adjusting their culture likewise when they did not find it (in fact, it getting more dry/arid), they domesticated animals and cultivated grains but on a smaller scale than the Northern tribes. Also wars broke out fighting for better more arable lands and increased explorations broadened migration routes. You get the idea.

I read this book in fifth grade and have loved it ever since. If you've seen M. Night Shamalan's The Village, this book is pretty much that movie, only better and the original.

In this lovely, quick read, Anne Lamott is just brimming with helpful advice and funny anecdotes. Her primary point is summarized in a quote for the intellectually thrilling film "Cool Runnings" where the coach tells the bobsled wannabes "If you aren't enough before the gold, you won't be enough after the gold." With that she tells us writer wannabes to write, and let go of the carrot of publishing. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won't, but the creative life, the writing life has much to offer regardless.

I went looking for A Feather on the Breath of God but all that Book Court had was The Last of Her Kind, which delves into one very complicated friendship against the backdrop of the 60s and 70s in Manhattan. Friendship and its complexities -- both joy and disappointments so easily given and forgotten, sometimes -- is a source of constant fascination for me, so this was an absorbing read.
