Für Ortskundige mit dem nötigen Lokalkolorit versehen, führt es uns durch die persönlichen Erfahrungen des Autors. Dem heutigen Trend der ""lustigen"" Umschreibungen folgend, bekommt der Leser einen Einblick in die geradlinige und ehrliche Philosophie des gemeinen Ruhrpöttlers. Wie sachta Cervinski schon für mich: ""Anton, du machstat auch falsch mit dain Gahten. Du machstat ganz fakehrt, mitti fiele Ahbait, da kannze auch kain Spass an dain Gahtn ham: Du darfs dich nich mehr Land nehm, als daine Olle umgrahm kann. Dann hasse Spass an dain Gahtn."""

odd book. I grabbed it at the library, thinking (from a quick scan of the blurbs etc.) it would be an analysis of contemporary political or cultural issues from the standpoint of the timeless wisdom of Ben Franklin. Instead, it's actually written in the voice of Ben Franklin (when I established my printing business in 17xx, etc. etc. etc.), a device that becomes exceptionally tedious as a launching pad for the author's political views. The views themselves (religious tolerance is good; high national budget deficits are bad.......) are not sufficiently remarkable or insightful as to make up for the cloying presentation style.

I think this is one case where the movie is actually better than the book. "The Door in the Floor," is based on only the first 1/3 of the book, which is the strongest part. However, after that it really starts to lag. The characters just annoy me. Why do Ruth's readers take her books so personally? And why are they so obsessed with her personal life? Why is she even famous? The "bad boyfriend" seems to be a central theme in the book, but it doesn't even describe what she has to be so ashamed of in her past. That a supposedly world renowned author would use such a trite phrase in the title of her book makes me cringe. On the other hand, Eddie's books are just laughable. How does this guy get five novels published at all? The end seems to redeem the book a little bit and tie up all the loose ends. I think the good parts mostly made up for the slow parts.

A huge fan of Rick Moody's book Garden State, I was eager to read Purple America. But I could not get into this book at all. The prose was choppy and so I did not feel for any of the characters. I suppose in retrospect I was looking for a cross between Empire Falls and The Corrections.
