This book captures angst so well--such a quick read and filled with fun pop culture references. Also, it does not underestimate the intelligence of the audience it is aimed for (young adults). I remember reading this and the book kept referencing "Big Boy"--from California, this, to me, made no sense. Now, if they had said "Bob's Big Boy"--then I would have been like "A-HA". That aside--it was a good quick read. Can't remember too much about it since it was so long ago that I read it, but I do remember just tearing through it.

My daughter gave me this book as I continue my grief over the loss of my husband. This book brings me peace and comfort ... and hope. I love the way it focuses on what I can do. It honors the past, but is future oriented: what I can today. And I just love some of the quotes: "Ignorance gives one a large range of probabilities". -George Elliott Since I read one reading per day, I will be reading this for well over a year.

When I read the blurb I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this book and the premise is great. I really wanted to like it but I struggled with it and ultimately I couldn't carry on reading it. I accept a certain amount of scene setting and getting to know characters but nothing was happening in the first few chapters. The one plot point there was - possibly a new act joining the museum - was just incidental and only seemed intriguing because the character in the book stated it was. There was no meat there and no hook. I didn't even feel any empathy with Bartholomew despite the best will in the world. I don't need high drama to keep me hooked, just a desire to know the characters better is often enough for me - but with this book I'm afraid there just wasn't enough there for me.

I love historical fiction, but haven't read any (at least that have stuck with me) about medieval times. Wow! It helped me to understand the mind of a raping, pillaging, sick-o, such as William Hamleigh, as well as the power of the church on the law of the land. I will definitely read the next two (also honkin' HUGE!) in the series! Only instead of hauling around the paperback, I'm downloading it on the iTouch!

These knitting yarns are rather mindless...so why do I read them? It is always fun to see what is happening at the Thursday Nite "Knit'n'Bitches" around the US. These women had wonderful relationships and spent more time talking about their friends than bitching. They also had a great setup for dining during their time together. Good food and lots of wine as they knit colorful squares to be made into blankets for children in South Africa. They all wear beautiful swaeters and don't seem to gain weight as they eat their way through numerous scones in the mornings and restaurant dinners. The mystery? Well, it was rather transparent and not terribly engaging.

This novel has a great start. Character development happens quickly, as does the action of the story. As the plot unfolds, the action (and I say this in all seriousness) is a little out there, even for Stephen King. Not even a semblance of believability. I found myself stopping frequently, unable to enjoy the story as character after character is slaughtered by cartoon characters. Very silly. However, there are some redeemable journal excerpts from one of the main characters and letters that tell about horrific, realistic events. I'd give the novel a 2.5, but the system allows for a 2 or 3, so I'm being generous. In my opinion, not King's finest.

One of the things I like about the Dummies series is the format. You know what you are getting - while some of the authors do a better job of it than others - you're expecting a primer, a comprehensive introduction. Unlike some other cookbooks I've reviewed recently (notably, Ani Phyo's book) - this one is very factual and filled with real cooking science & nutritional information. There's not any self-indulgent rambling, New Age nonsense or pretentious/vain photoshoots of the author(s) looking ridiculously thin & pious while eating something on a streetcorner clad in pricey Lululemon yoga togs. In fact - there aren't many images at all! The book is jam packed with great information, tutorials and recipes. There is even a meal plan for a 4- week program to transition to raw or just to lose weight & try out a lot of recipes. While I would not consider myself a beginner - I did learn some interesting facts and quite admire the clean, methodical & organized way that the authors have presented the content. This is a book that I would happily pass along to my 65 year old mom or her 70 year old sister and feel confident that they would be up and running within a week, whipping up delicious raw nut cheeses and other goodies. However, I'm not handing off this book because I want to try some of the recipes - there are some great recipes for the dehydrator as well as some nice sauces, dressings and other items. I get the sense that some of the recipes are similar to the Cafe Gratitude cookbook - but, when it comes down to it - there's only so many ways to soak almonds and make pate and some are much more popular to our palates than others. I highly recommend this cookbook as your first raw/vegan cookbook - great information and instructions that will ensure success, hence, delight & enjoyment.
