This book is pretty much a fluff mystery. There are several different problems solved which keeps it interesting. The book is most interesting because it is set in Botswana. I enjoyed the cultural descriptions and the setting. The characters were unique also. <- This book is just being released as a series on HBO. I'm watching it at present. Some of the characters have been made more colorful, and I think the gay hairdresser has been added. (Although he may show up in later books.) The show is good, but if I hadn't read the book I don't know that it would hold my attention... ->

I can't really find anything to say about this book that will do it justice. I am just sorry I waited so long to read it. I have heard that some of Haley's claims about his genealogy and research are disputed, but I don't care--I still laughed and I still cried. It might not be fact, but it might be the truth.

I read this book having already seen the so-so film adaptation by Jean-Jacques Annaud, meaning I already knew who the murderer was. Amazingly, though, I still found myself devouring the book at an astonishing rate (I'm normally a slow reader). Digressions from the central mystery plot are frequent and sometimes lengthy, but if you're a nerd like me, then you'll enjoy soaking up every bizarre bit of medieval trivia that Eco throws your way.

I picked up this book because it seemed as though everywhere I turned, people (and websites) were recommending it to me. When I finally got around to reading it, it took me weeks to finish, because I kept getting woozy after two or three pages, as if I were sitting in the Garden District in July, crammed into a cream-colored suit and about to pass out from heat stroke. Call me a philistine, but I need more than just pretty language and poetic intimations of world-weariness to keep me interested in a book.

Compared to the first one I felt that this one was more funny due to the sarcasim. I felt that the girl Keira was more of a realistic type of girl compared to Brittney in the first book. At times there was still that West Side Story/Romeo and Juliet crap. Some parts of the book were in sink of what happened to Alex in the first book, which I didn't like because I like my books to be unpredictable. I gave it a higher rating compared to the first one because I felt it was at least more realistic even though at times you noticed it was following the same events which occured to Alex and Brittneys relationship in the first book.
