This review refers to the whole Farseer Trilogy: I read The Farseer Saga years ago and it is still one of my favorite epic fantasies. Its main strengths are its simple writing style and excellent characterization. Robin Hobb's prose is lovely — straightforward and simple. It never calls attention to itself (and therefore away from the story). The characters are complex and believable. Fitz is my favorite fantasy "hero" and someone I came to really care about. He's not perfect, he's not beautiful, he's not a master swordsman. He's an abandoned bastard coming of age. He's insecure, he's lonely, and sometimes he broods. Not in an annoying whiny way, but in a normal, realistic way. Things don't always go so well for Fitz. His story is heart-wrenching, and I felt emotionally drained after I finished it. But somehow, that was so satisfying. Read more Robin Hobb book reviews at Fantasy literature.

I really enjoyed "Al Capone Does My Shirts." The story is unique, with an interesting historical setting, and a compelling family dynamic. Moose is an eminently likeable character, and he’s going through experiences that are relatable to a broad audience. I think Choldenko’s portrayal of Natalie was authentic and sympathetic, and the relationship between brother and sister was touching. I liked that the author juxtaposed what could be a difficult topic (autism and its impact on family) with Alcatraz Island (with all its oddness and perceived danger). The interspersion of baseball, adolescent friendships, and a scheming mean girl made it even better. I would definitely use this book in a middle school classroom. I might create pre-reading lessons based on Alcatraz, The Great Depression, and perhaps, Al Capone. I think students would enjoy hearing about what life was like for civilians on Alcatraz, and would have fun imagining how they would respond to being in a situation like Moose’s.

Really loved this book, but the end is unsettling. I like unsettling.

Despite my obsession with Coney Island... I've yet to be able to make it through this one.

Elliot Eisner makes such a powerful case for art education in this work that I think all politicians lobbying for cultural program cuts should be forced to read and discuss this book. The specifics about curricula and cognition get a bit heavy if one isn't interested in these educational/psychological fields, but the illustrations and case studies about specific students' progress in the classroom because of an artistic approach are compelling.

This is a young adult new release that I picked up at the library. It was entertaining in a teenish sort of way. Did have references to Frankie's classmates having sexual relationships. Not for tweens or young teens. Pretty tasteful, though. (Better than the Twilight series.)

But the sex scenes are worth 5 stars. Seriously, prehistoric smut does not get better than this.

Muy buena, abre perspectivas de mundo.
