This was a great book for the audience intended. My 9 year-old LOVED it. So highly recommended for young readers. It is the pre-story on Peter Pan. Pretty fun reading. I just can't give it 5 stars along with the classics.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Mary Beard. Her writing is spot-on and is backed-up by the perfect amount of wit, research, warmth, reason, and intelligence. This book is a nice read because, although it is scholarly in nature, Beard has a conversational tone that really gives her subject life. It's one of the few books I've read for research purposes that I would dare to call a "page-turner." Another point is simply that the parthenon's history is so expansive and volatile, that it's a great success that she managed to cover every angle so thoroughly without dragging it out into a multi-volume work. She gets right to the meat of the matter and has a talent for guiding the reader through the material in a very measured way and with succint and thoughtful analysis. When I was researching the parthenon marbles for my thesis, this is one book I felt I could really trust and come back to time and time again as part of the foundation for my own conjectures. My copy is complete with coffee stains, dog-earred pages, and writing all over the margins...it is certainly well-loved.

from the cover: Dr Jeffrey Thompson is a sound therapist and composer. Owen Morrison is a guided imagery instructor. First off I have the tape. Second I didn't like the sound of the voice or the sound of the "music" so I never put in the time to listen to the script. I will consider the possiblity that the tape is seriously tired and I would like what I hear if I heard the CD.

I was never a huge fan of Mary Downing Hahn as a child-- most of her books didn't appeal to me (I like fantasy). But this one is phenomenal. I don't remember much, but I loved her interesting take on ghosts: that they are imprints of the past formed by strong emotions. As I recall, one character was the ghost of an old lady who was still alive. A good ghost story, and of course, as it is by Hahn, an excellent read for young people.

My son, a Sr. at Middlebury College brought this book home over Christmas break. Shane, (the author) had spoken at Middlebury during a "homeless awareness" week. The last book my son brought home was Blue Like Jazz. If you liked that you will probably like this. Makes you think seriously about your everyday walk with Christ. It's honest, refreshing, challenging and very thought provoking. Easy to read but you need a while to digest each chapter. I wanted my friends to read it so i could get their perspectives on some of his points. Great discussion material.

Well I didn't read this version of it. I wish I would have my library only had the 1987 version, so outdated I giggled lots. Plus I think Ann Heinrichs is a better author aimed at a child's audience than Dorothy Sutherland.

I really loved this book. I thought the subject matter was handled in a very realistic and sensitive way. I loved the family interactions and the way you followed their lives through the eyes of Calliope. The ending was just terrific. This is not to be missed.
