When I first read this book, I thought that it was one of the best things ever. There was a diverse cast of characters, an interesting plot, had epic battles and fight scenes, and a really cool magic system. Now though, it's still kind of cool. The plot, even though I know see it as the Star Wars/Lord of the Rings mixture it is, is still solid. The characters are a bit less interesting now that I'm a bit more read then I was a few years ago, but still hold up. But at least the magic system is still pretty cool! There are fight scenes, but aren't anywhere near detailed enough to be uncomfortable, and that's really any moral issues one might find. Good: The language is a decent attempt in trying to bring back an older style of writing, which is commendable especially in a young adult fantasy novel. The magic system is interesting, and can be used to great visual and narrative effect. Bad: Clearly overly..."inspired" by Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. If you have time for a good fantasy series, go ahead and give this a try.

This is an amazing and quick read about the N-word, its legal, cultural and political history. For anyone interested in race-relations, empowerment theories, law or just plain information on culture, this is the book to read.

Still one of the best how-to's of day trading, nearly 100 years later.

This is more like 2.5 stars, I think. I was alternately captivated by, frustrated with and angry at the characters in varying degrees. What I liked: It was so nice to read a book where there was true physical passion between characters, but the main character still kept her integrity. Also, the passages where the whole family were together were absolute magic and so enjoyable to read. The loving relationship of Faith's parents was fantastic. What I didn't like: There were quite a few sections that were fairly repetitive plot-wise, and I felt like the characters were being really "dumb" at times. If I had a nickel for every time a character "caught her breath" or "a small gasp escaped her lips", I'd retire right now. I also felt like the characters were put in a situation where no realistic happy resolution was possible, but resolved it was...glossing over quite a few MAJOR issues!

I love a book that teaches you something while you are entertained by the story. The story links Jews and Palestinians in a who done it in San Francisco.

Poe was in many respects the first foot in the door with Horror, the detective story, and science fiction, and he ended up dying in the gutter. I could blame the absinthe, but in many areas of art it would seem the guy who's blazing the trail is the first to get taken out by the Indians.

Michael Chabon is considered a good writer. He won a Pultizer Prize for one of his books, not this one. But I was not impressed by this book. It is set in the 10th century and is about the adventures of a couple of men ("Gentlemen") of the road. One of the men is Jewish, the other African. There were too many characters with funny names for me to keep track of. The feats of derring-do were too predictable and unbelievable. One virtue of the book is that it is very short -- only four CDs worth, so it won't take you long to check it out.

What a fun read. If you've seen the movie or not, take a moment, sit back, and read this purely fun novel. There are a lot of similarities to the film, but you can tell that Miyasaki took the story and made it his own, a fact of which Diana Jones is content with. The biggest differences I noticed were in the characters, Howl and Sophie. I found Howl to be less endearing and Sophie to be a little more insecure. But make no mistake, that didn't mean I liked the story any less. Both stand alone as great stories. I have to go watch the movie again.
