I think I read this when I was 11 and I became hooked on Stephen King. I was a voracious Stephen King fan and my mom, thinking I liked all things macabre, bought me a Dean Koontz novel. One word- blaghh. Stephen King is pop culture, but he does it right.

My little, little ones love this book. Even though it has no words, its silly, and they can relate to getting in trouble when they didn't necessarily mean to be being bad. You can improvise the words when you read it to them, and when you read it with a lot of expression, its super cute!

I decided to get into this book when (in addition to everyone talking about it)...I flipped to a random page and found this passage, "The document that reads 'We The People' was written by over 70 rich, white, men who had a vested corporate interest in a strong, centralized, government". I had to stop after beginning my course work in 'real, official, authorized' history.

PROTAGONIST: Eduard Estviill and Borja Masdeu SETTING: Barcelona SERIES: Debut RATING: 3.25 Although they are twins, Eduard Martinez Estivill and Jose Martinez Estivill (now known as Borja Masdeu-Canals Saez de Astorga) have long lived separate lives. No one is aware of their relationship, including Eduard's wife, Montse. It's only when Borja returns to Barcelona that he and Eduard reconnect. In fact, they go into business together. They have a consulting firm in which they play the role of intermediary in the kinds of negotiations the rich don't like to conduct themselves. Many times, they are actually doing the work of private investigators. That is the situation with their newest client, Lluis Font. Lluis is concerned because there is a portrait of his wife being exhibited locally. The subject matter leads Font to believe that his wife is cheating on him. He wants Eduard and Borja to find the artist and uncover the truth about the alleged affair. He is a political animal who can ill afford a scandal, although his own behavior is not necessarily very circumspect. Ultimately, the stakes are raised when Lidia Font dies after eating poisoned candies. Even though Eduard and Borja are not private investigators, Borja has a real knack for this kind of work. As he and Eduard chased down the leads as to the identity of the artist, Borja shows great skill at conducting interrogations and arriving at reasonable deductions. In general, Borja is the more flamboyant of the pair; while Eduard is mired in a solid domestic life, Borja is playing the field with a married woman and Montse's sister. Although the book is blurbed as being a "scathing satire" with "hilarious dialogue", I found it to be relatively average overall. I really enjoy books set in other countries, learning about the mores of a strange place. I didn't get much of a sense of the culture and life of Barcelona from this book. It was entertaining without being truly unique, and it moved along rather slowly for my tastes. It had several standard crime fiction elements replete with red herrings, blackmail, and so on. The actual revelation of the murderer was a disappointment. A NOT SO PERFECT CRIME is a debut novel. It won the 2007 Brigada 21 Prize for the best Catalan mystery novel and has been translated into several languages.

** spoiler alert ** Very gripping at the beginning. Liked the perspective of Little Bee. Got more and more unrealistic deeper into the book. Really, they are talking about all these horrific events while the kid watches cartoons? He just zones out completely while his mother's lover and new stranger yell at one another? The 4 year old seems more like a 2 year old. Quick read.

This is going to be a fun one. We can already tell. It's an alternate history, science fiction, space travel tale. Update: We listened to this whole book on a weekend trip. Unfortunately, I was sick, kept falling asleep and had to be filled in on what I missed. But, before that happened, I had already been sure of a five star rating. It was a lot of fun to listen to Larklight. The reader was excellent and the book full of wry British humor. It was vocabulary rich and amazingly written with the two main characters fully developed and very fun. I kept thinking how intelligent the author must be to have taken the Victorian belief system and their available knowledge and information and run with this novel. I have never read a book like this and I really enjoyed it. My oldest son gave it four stars because he thought things were cleaned up too quickly and easily. I stick with my five stars because of the creativity, the vocabulary and because it was very well-written! This was not a book with layers or with the battle of good and evil with a strong spiritual component, in my opinion, just fun and surprising and altogether worth reading!

Even though a person is classified as being in the lower class does not mean that their working abilities are any lower or worse than a person in a higher class. Poor people work just as much and like everyone else, but their commision is just a lot less than the average working adult. That does not mean it makes them any worse, sometimes they are the hardest works. Being poor is just a classification, it is not who the person is.
