Bruno Rodolpho brunorodolpho — PROTAGONIST: Eduard Estviill and Borja Masdeu SETTING: Barcelona SERIES: Debut RATING: 3.25 Although they are twins, Eduard Martinez Estivill and Jose Martinez Estivill (now known as Borja Masdeu-Canals Saez de Astorga) have long lived separate lives. No one is aware of their relationship, including Eduard's wife, Montse. It's only when Borja returns to Barcelona that he and Eduard reconnect. In fact, they go into business together. They have a consulting firm in which they play the role of intermediary in the kinds of negotiations the rich don't like to conduct themselves. Many times, they are actually doing the work of private investigators. That is the situation with their newest client, Lluis Font. Lluis is concerned because there is a portrait of his wife being exhibited locally. The subject matter leads Font to believe that his wife is cheating on him. He wants Eduard and Borja to find the artist and uncover the truth about the alleged affair. He is a political animal who can ill afford a scandal, although his own behavior is not necessarily very circumspect. Ultimately, the stakes are raised when Lidia Font dies after eating poisoned candies. Even though Eduard and Borja are not private investigators, Borja has a real knack for this kind of work. As he and Eduard chased down the leads as to the identity of the artist, Borja shows great skill at conducting interrogations and arriving at reasonable deductions. In general, Borja is the more flamboyant of the pair; while Eduard is mired in a solid domestic life, Borja is playing the field with a married woman and Montse's sister. Although the book is blurbed as being a "scathing satire" with "hilarious dialogue", I found it to be relatively average overall. I really enjoy books set in other countries, learning about the mores of a strange place. I didn't get much of a sense of the culture and life of Barcelona from this book. It was entertaining without being truly unique, and it moved along rather slowly for my tastes. It had several standard crime fiction elements replete with red herrings, blackmail, and so on. The actual revelation of the murderer was a disappointment. A NOT SO PERFECT CRIME is a debut novel. It won the 2007 Brigada 21 Prize for the best Catalan mystery novel and has been translated into several languages.

Luke Boening lukebd1f — I loved loved loved this book!!! When I first saw it at the book store I wasn't sure that i wanted to read it, but then I saw the preview for the movie and I decided that i wanted to read the book before the movie came out. It was sooo good that I finished it within 3 days. The story is about a girl named skeeter who just graduated from Mississippi and moves home and wants to become a writer. An editor at a publishing company tells her that she should write about stuff that bothers her and she decides to write about the way that blacks maids are treated in the south. The story is told from 3 points of a view, skeeters and minny's (a black maid) and abileen's (another maid). I don't want to get into too much detail because I hate when I already know the ending to a book before I even begin reading it. But I think this is a great read for anyone.

Bächli Andreas resbaechli9417 — I made it part way through this and just lost interest. I think if I was a different religious affiliation this book would be more intriguing, but it felt like stuff I've heard all my life. But at some point I am going to try it again. I might just be in a weird mood :)

Adelaide Cc adelaidecclin — I'm not sure what to say about Rhoda Janzen's Mennonite in a Little Black Dress . It's definitely not the type of book that I would have picked up on my own but reading out of my preferred genres is what I love about book club. Ms. Janzen grew up as a Mennonite. She tells lots of stories about the difficultly of being a Mennonite as a child. Shame-inducing foods and all. She grows up, becomes a scholar, marries and divorces a real piece of work, and while recovering from an accident travels home to visit her Mennonite past. The book is interesting. It gave me a lot to think about. I think if I had to describe it in one word I'd choose conflicted. Ms. Janzen is conflicted about her past. She's conflicted about her marriage, her Mennonite upbringing, and religion in general. Thus throughout the book she praises and then disparages and makes light of each of these things. It made for a conflicted reading experience as well.

_iobhaneli
Tio Laing _iobhaneli — A really terrible book: not informative, not funny; just a sad attempt to explain a bit about opera in a humorous way. It didn't work on any level.
