omg, this was good. it was a bit different from the way the movie went, but what book/movie duo isn't? it was really well written and i couldn't seem to put it down once i finally got into it, tho the last chapter or so was a bit slow it seemed for me. regardless, i really enjoyed it and my favorite line in the entire book would have to be: "All of them snicker. One of them asks what 'barter' means." (p 158)

The first ever book on writing I have read as I venture into this new and exciting pursuit. Being my first, I have read the book from cover to cover and found it "just right" in terms of length and density and was able to immediately apply some tools, while noticing that others have affected the way I think about and structure my writing. This won't inspire you with brilliant ideas but will give you the tools of implementing the ideas you already have.

I am so sorry to give this book 2 stars, because I love love love Anjali Banerjee, and I think everyone should read her books.... just not this one. Imaginary Men was leaps and bounds better, and Maya Running was even better than that. This book isn't bad, not by any definition, and in fact parts of it are better and more interesting than Imaginary Men (I loved the sari shop and the sari talk, for instance), but largely it's just hugely predictable with a bland ending and a tepid cast of characters. Sorry, Anjali. Better luck with your next book, I guess.

Nice story about a group of people living in Sarajevo during the siege of the city in the 1990s. A quick-read, it reminds people to not take too many things for granted, showing how a normal urban life can change overnight to create a place where surviving is the only thing that matters, though merely surviving is not what life was meant to be.

Odd - the version I had was called 'Fateless'. At least I hope it was, because I reviewed it for some publication or other. Either way, suitably disorienting, and eschewing the desperate grasp for poignancy that makes a lot of Holocaust narratives so disappointing...
