I read "How to Be Lost" and liked it. This book did not engage me though and I have experience as a doctor in a prison. I didn't feel the emotions of the characters as real.

It's October, 1609. Although her best friend Jessie Bolton has returned to England with her grieving father following her mother's death, nine-year-old Elizabeth Barker is hopeful. The small colony of Jamestown, Virginia, is finally beginning to feel like home. The birth of Lizzie's baby sister, Abigail, has brought the Barker family joy. And Lizzie's twin brother, Caleb, will join the family come spring. But nothing can prepare Lizzie, her family, and the other colonies for the hardships they will face over winter. There isn't nearly enough food to last until the next ship arrives in the spring, and as soon as the first snow falls, disease once again breaks out among the colonists. Lizzie fears for her life, for her parent's lives, but especially for the life of little Abigail, whom Lizzie fears may not be strong enough to survive the winter. Lizzie and her new friend Mary cling to each other for comfort and pray for deliverance, yet even their strong spirits may not be enough to keep their families alive. As Lizzie struggles through the death of friends and loved ones, family and strangers, and starvation and sickness, she fights to keep her hope alive and to never give up. Told through Lizzie's spirited diary entries, this book continues the story begun in Our Strange New Land. Both that book and this one reveal what life might have been like for a young girl during the difficult winter of 1609-1610 in Jamestown Colony. I highly reccomend this book to all fans of the Dear America and My America series, especially those that loved the first book about Lizzie.

Never thought I would be reviewing a book by Fish positively, but here it is. This one was a lot of fun.
To put it simply, the book is about a guy who tries to imitate a guy who imitates Steve Martin. This guy is probably the most confused and boring character I've read in a very long time. The book contains nothing that either resembles or even brings to mind anything relating to Steve Martin besides his walking posture. At some point the author gives up on the whole Steve Martin thing and then the book deteriorates into a blow by blow account of the main character's dating life. The writing is decent enough, but more imagination was needed. See http://bravenewworks.com/ for discussions on other books and art.

This was an exciting read and hard to put down, but whereas many other readers liked Secret History better than Special Topics in Calamity Physics, I strongly preferred Calamity Physics. I have far less affection for the narrator of Secret History, and a lot of it was just a bit too graphic for me--the college kids are so promiscuous and there are a lot of drugs in it. Not at all like my college experience! On the other hand, the author did a great job of including a lot of literary standards you find in Greek drama, Homer, Russian literature, and even children's classic literature, so that was very clever. And the language was beautiful, occasionally making me laugh.

The older I get the more interested in history I become. I picked this one up at my kids' school library - and loved it. It's a very well-written summary of a very critical turning point in our world's history. It made me want to learn more, so I turned it in and checked out three other WWII books! One question I still want answered: What does the "D" in D-Day stand for?? (But it's probably just a designation!)
