Junior Garcia somostanra3713 — It's October, 1609. Although her best friend Jessie Bolton has returned to England with her grieving father following her mother's death, nine-year-old Elizabeth Barker is hopeful. The small colony of Jamestown, Virginia, is finally beginning to feel like home. The birth of Lizzie's baby sister, Abigail, has brought the Barker family joy. And Lizzie's twin brother, Caleb, will join the family come spring. But nothing can prepare Lizzie, her family, and the other colonies for the hardships they will face over winter. There isn't nearly enough food to last until the next ship arrives in the spring, and as soon as the first snow falls, disease once again breaks out among the colonists. Lizzie fears for her life, for her parent's lives, but especially for the life of little Abigail, whom Lizzie fears may not be strong enough to survive the winter. Lizzie and her new friend Mary cling to each other for comfort and pray for deliverance, yet even their strong spirits may not be enough to keep their families alive. As Lizzie struggles through the death of friends and loved ones, family and strangers, and starvation and sickness, she fights to keep her hope alive and to never give up. Told through Lizzie's spirited diary entries, this book continues the story begun in Our Strange New Land. Both that book and this one reveal what life might have been like for a young girl during the difficult winter of 1609-1610 in Jamestown Colony. I highly reccomend this book to all fans of the Dear America and My America series, especially those that loved the first book about Lizzie.

rabronst
Rebecca Bronstein rabronst — I'd give it more stars if I could! This is a book of essays written about the authors experience in the Vietnam war. I could hardly put the book down and now I'm a little disappointed to have it end so quickly. It is difficult to read, but gives the reader a real window into the life of a soldier. As horrifying as it was, as war is, my favorite passage was within the essay "How To Tell A True War Story". O'Brien writes about the "beauty" of war. I'm going to include it here because I read it over and over. It really had an impact on me. I remember my dad who is a Vietnam vet talking about how beautiful the country was. He has always wanted to travel back to Vietnam to be able to enjoy it. But I remember thinking how incredible it was that he was in the middle of this horrible violent war, death all around him, and he was able to see this foreign country as beautiful. [image error] O'Brien writes, "At the hour of dusk you sit at your foxhole and look out on a wide river turning pinkish red, and at the mountains beyond, and although in the morning you must cross the river and go into the mountains and do terrible things and maybe die, even so, you find yourself studying the fine colors on the river, you feel wonder and awe at the setting of the sun, and you are filled with a hard, aching love for how the world could be and always should be, but now is not."

Liju Shashidharan lijushashi — An underrated book that everyone will love. I found the slow pace of the book to be the best part.

kapoorram98e07
Rameshwar Kapoor kapoorram98e07 — The Hollow the most emotionally gripping novel I have read this year. So cleverly and beautifully written. A story based around forbidden love, haunting moments and the headless horsemen I odd combination but an amazing one just the same! The plot is so original and I have never come across anything like it. I couldn't compare it to anything right now and I love it. A girl falling for someone who isn't exactly what he seems. As well as hanging in a graveyard for most of her free time. One of the things I loved most about this novel was the way Jessica would describe Abbys surroundings. It makes you imagen each and every tombstone in that very haunting graveyard and I think its really effective. The characters are amazing in this novel. We have Caspian the gorgeous and very haunting lead guy. The way Jessica writes him is so captivating. Then theirs Abby. You can defiantly feel Abby's passion and proudness of her town history and wanting to have her own perfume business I think Jessica writes it perfectly and has made Abby a great role model for people her age. You can defiantly relate to her character in more ways that one. I love novels that teach me new things and this novel has done that. I had never heard of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by American author Washington Irving. And as I read the pages It made me want to learn more about it. Whole different twist to the headless horsemen that will have jaw dropping. The beautiful scenes between Caspian and Abby are so captivating and gripping. It will leave you swooning for days. I cannot wait to get started on the sequel! read The Hollow you would be Dead crazy not to!

kelseysugg
Kelsey Sugg kelseysugg — This is a book that has always been great for teaching colors and numbers along with the life of a butterfly. My toddler nephew loves this book and we read it several times a week. His favorite is the page with all the different foods. At 15 months, he can name almost every different food in the book. *If you take a piece of yarn or gummy worm, you can weave it through the pages as you follow the story and it makes it more exciting for the little ones while it works on coordination skills.

Eason Mok a10193054017519 — In a sane world, this would be a textbook, despite its spooky title. Robert Anton Wilson, so sadly now gone from this world, was a treasure of a human being, and in this volume his clear, rational, truthful voice rings out to all who can still hear. Read this book! From the laugh-out-loud funny introduction to the glossary of substances that closes out the book, RAW is nothing so much as clear-eyed and objective. I'd trust what he has to say over an unmarked semi-truck full of D.A.R.E. officers.
