This book had a couple slow moments but I guess there wasn't a way to make laying in the bed in a house alone exciting especially considering her hands and feet were tied to the bed posts. Gerald ties his wife to the bed to have a little fun but before he gets to have fun he has a heart attack and dies in the middle of the floor. Now his wife is stuck in a house on a lake with no neighbors to rescue her and a stray hungry dog coming to investigate the dead body.

Honestly loved this. I read it as a part of a compilation which included The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. Of the three Red Harvest was my favorite but don't get keen on it being a detective novel because it isn't. Sure there's a sleuth in it but this is the sort of Yojimbo sleuth who doesn't solve too many crimes that don't lead directly to more of them. It's definitely a noir action chronicle. But the lines and paragraphs are achingly good. Sentences that pivot on a dime as if being shadowed by something they can't quite make out, Chapters weighted down by their titles like concrete galoshes, Dialog ground through tight teeth and characters that are all gun toting caricatures better than anything Dick Tracy could have come up with. Simply gorgeous writing - if you like looking at perfectly worked stone or a worn out punching bag.

The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua is a wonderful read. It came at a time when I needed a serious laugh over the trials and tribulations of being a strict mother. Amy's intention was to write a story contrasting Western and Chinese parenting. What unfolds instead is a laugh-out-loud story of raising a strong-willed child in the challenging society we live in. The author walks through her successes and failures as a Tiger Mother stopping to explain how her culture influences her style of mothering. If you are a mother and have ever doubted your skills this book is a must!

This book is about so much more than gardening. Pollan examines many different philosophies regarding nature and makes them accessible while putting them all into perspective. I definitely re-thought my relationship to the natural world and recommend this book to anyone who would do the same.

Koontz has been described as a master storyteller and this reviewer agrees. His love for dogs shines through with this book and enhances the story. The plot moves at a fast pace, with plenty of evil characters to entertain thrill-seekers, buffeted by Amy and Brian’s love for one another and for dogs. Excellent book.
