Last weekend in Portland, I visited my favorite store on the planet, Powell's. If you haven't been to Portland and/or don't know what Powell's is... you should come and I will oh-so gladly show you the front door and then proceed to get distracted and lost, leaving you alone to find your way in this massive book store. Anyway, I accidentally bought 4 or so books (for $20!) and this is the one that I hadn't really thought of previously, but was most excited to read. Ohhh how I loved this book. At times it's a cute and funny story about this unusual family of 4 wives and 28 children, but at other times it deals with some pretty serious themes likes death and adultery and how to be happy. I loved the different perspectives and the poor, confused father. Anyway, I definitely recommend giving it a read!

I like the novels of Julian Barnes, but this one was rather depressing for me. Perhaps I had my own share of a bleak soul reflected on the book while I was reading it. Still, the novel makes you think about important issues like memory, remembering and grief. Barnes also makes you think about how we process our memories in our minds. Do we really remember what we have really gone through? Is life an accumulation of what happens to us?

Another great "Bug Man" book. There is more to Nick than we think, he is actually starting pupate and turning into something more like our species. The end was difficult, I would rather of not had to choose. I can hardly wait for the next book to come out.

The Kite runner was of Afghanastan before the Russian invasion; this takes place later. It is a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of living in this country torn by waring with Russia, waring between tribes and factions and all of the time the innocent suffering. It is told through two women, an illegitimate child, Miriam, of a servant whose father loves her but won't own her and whose mother tries to develop a symbiotic relationship with her while hating the girl's father. The other is a beautiful child,Laila, 20 years younger, favored by her father and ignored by her mother because the two older sons are fighting in the war. The lives of the two women come togeher and blossom into a beautiful relationship, while they both endure cruelty and all around them is death and suffering. Just so this doesn't prevent you from reading this I will tell you it ends beautifully. I was struck by the randomness of the fighting and the degredation of women and their mental and physical suffering.
