** spoiler alert ** I love this book....I had so much fun reading The Dumpster I could not put it down. Nicole, poor Nicole lol... right under her bedroom window was a big smelly Dumpster, but never in a million years did she ever think a big smelly dumpster would find herRomance or even love. Nicole wanted a man so bad that wanted her that she kind of gave her self to men to fast, so man after man she even found one in the Dumpster that was helping her get a DVD player out she threw out of her Window into the dumpster that was given to her by a man that Dumped her on a DVD in that DVD player lol. Her Tenant at her Condo Building was avoiding her like the plague over the Dumpster Issue or was he? I am telling you guys this is a must read. The Romance, and Humor in this book is just right and I have not read a romance that made me laugh hard like this one did. You will have to read this book to find out if Nicole finds the man of her dreams. Thank You Becky and you know if you ever need a reviewer I would be honored to read more of your books.

This book of short stories was beautifully written. It was interesting to see a non-Vietnamese man write from such a specific point of view (Vietnamese immigrants to the Louisiana area). I know he served in Vietnam, but I would be curious to see more of his background because he seemed to know this culture so well. I usually don't like short stories, but this was an excellent book.

More scary concepts--as the world shifts toward conservatism, it is important for thinking beings to realize that despite all the hype about the information explosion, there is still a lot less transparency in government, particularly in the United States of America, where it seems all the more hypocritical.

One of the most suprising, awake and alive books of short stories I have ever read. Lisa Moore is a Newfoundland writer and her work is truly unusual. Her voice feels sharp, her rhythms unexpected, the lives of her character's are painfully authentic and her stories resonate with meaning. Highly recommend discovering this author's work.

A little less dark comedy & a bit more serious than I'd initially hoped, but all that aside, this is one dang delightful, intelligent, and blissfully snarky read for the radioactive old hag in &/or near you.

This was a recommendation from an old work friend. We really don't have similar reading tastes, but I like her brain, and she recommended The Historian, which I was surprised to enjoy, so I thought I'd give this a whirl. And I just don't know how to review this book! There are parts of it that should get a 5, and parts of it I'd give a 2. The interactions between the painter and his previous subject were marvelous, deep, and made me think. But the reminiscent parts about Olvido ... bugged me. On the one hand, I was intrigued by her story, and on the other hand, she was *too* enigmatic, *too* elusive, *too* ... the tortured, aloof artist. When I quote text from a translated work, I'm never sure who should really get the credit, but there was some really beautiful and powerful writing in this book. Also, some deep things where I actually made a "hmmm" noise out loud as I was reading. Like ... he had mastered technique, but he lacked the essential characteristic that separates enthusiasm from talent. And how about this random Peter Pan reference? I haven't been back to that city for a long time, but now I want to see it again. With you, Faulques. I want you to help me look for the shadow of that little girl, and later when we're back in the hotel, take needle and thread and sew it back to my heels... And more deep: ... the towers of Manhattan, Hong Kong, London, or Madrid: any city of the many that lived trusting in the power of their arrogant colossi; a forest of modern, intelligently engineered buildings inhabited by people convinced of their youth, beauty, and immortality, certain that sorry and death could be kept at bay with the Enter key of a computer. Something interesting to me in this book that was translated into English was the onomatopoeic words - they weren't written as we would in English. The camera click was "clic" and the noise flies made was "zum". Fascinating choice by the translator or the author or the publisher or the editor ... well, fascinating to me. As I often do, I fixated on something small and unexplained. What was he taking pills for? They probably have greater and deeper meaning, and yet, the author didn't even say why he took them, and what the pain was. That kind of thing makes no sense to me. The other thing that came to me often was that throughout the book, the author calls Faulques "the painter of battles". It was obviously intentional, but since this book is the first time he is doing this, I couldn't quite figure it out. Ah well. I'm recommending this one to anyone who has ever taken art history, or who is interested in photography. And to a couple friends specifically who I think would really enjoy the specificity and detail the author wove throughout the story. This one will stay with me for a while.

I keep this collection of short stories by my bathtub, so I can read one of the stories while I soak. Pam Houston hasn't had good luck with men, and these stories explore that issue. I see some of my past mistakes in her stories, and my heart breaks with hers all over again.

This book was very instrumental in my personal examination. It's truths of quietness lingered long after closing the book.

An interesting look in to the lives of the somewhat-dysfunctional Walker family of Louisiana and their close family friends. The matriarch of the family, Vivi, belongs to a group of childhood friends called the Ya-Yas. You find yourself bouncing back and forth between the different members of the Walker family, as well as between times, sometimes reading about the Walker children as they are kids and sometimes as adults, which is a interesting technique. This could be confusing in other books, but the chapters are labeled clearly as to which point of view is being taken, as well as the year. It comes across as more of a collection of different family stories rather than one story. The stories are well written and engaging, and the book is a rather quick read.
