Petroneo Fernandes petroneo — I wish there was more...I thoroughly enjoyed the writing in the book, thought-provoking descriptions and encounters. I learned so much about the time period. The author's research must have been incredible. Mary was an incredible woman and character. She made for a wonderful book.

Rhoel Paghunasan aguynamedrho — This book of short stories was beautifully written. It was interesting to see a non-Vietnamese man write from such a specific point of view (Vietnamese immigrants to the Louisiana area). I know he served in Vietnam, but I would be curious to see more of his background because he seemed to know this culture so well. I usually don't like short stories, but this was an excellent book.

Hadir Abou hadirabouali — This eccentric and odd-paced book seemed a bit disjointed and confusing to me at first. I stuck with it, mostly because I am a great admirer of the author's film Withnail and I. It paid off, as I enjoyed the last 2/3 of the book much more than the first third. I didn't particularly care for some of it, but sometimes the author would write something so incredibly true and insightful about human relations, or something so beautiful or otherwise moving, that it made the book extremely worthwhile.

Helen Adams helenadams6a44 — I was not expecting much out of this book. I thought it would be predictable and just like every other romance novel I've ever read. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of twists this book included. In the end, I was shocked and horrified by the way the characters handled each situation. Their attitudes did fit their personalities though and I applaud the author for sticking to the true characters even though they may sound like idiots when it comes to their reactions. I really don't want to give anything away but I will say that I recently saw a movie preview for this book and I was appalled to see that they obviously changed things around. The movie could very well be just as wonderful as the book but there are definitely differences so I recommend to everyone that wants to see the movie that they should read the book first. The book is always the right version of the story.
