A joy to read, written in a casual style, it immediately draws you in and being a narrative doesn't shy away from making Victor Hugo like philophical asides that may require an entire chapter to flesh out (for example the discussion regarding the often undconsidered plusses of zoo life for animals). The books ending is fascinating and also confusing, I was left somewhat shocked and unsure how I felt about it - I'm still unsure but it was a very enjoyable read.

Very fast, very exciting read!! I can't wait for Volume 2. I read this book all night and couldn't put it down. I felt like this could be a big budget action movie, like a summer blockbuster with superheroes, but Rated-R. Anyone who is a fan of fantasy, action and adventure would love this, and the best part was the dialog. Some of the interaction between Cole (the main character) and his friend Jens was as funny as something you'd see in Superbad or a Kevin Smith movie. My biggest complaint is that it's not a very long book, but I know this is the intro to a larger series and I'm dying to read the rest. For 99 cents this was the best value I've found in 2011 for sure, and it's definitely a sleeper hit.

Clarifying and humanising science at it was in the past and has become. A loud call for anarchy in science.

3.5 stars, creeping up to 4 stars This book has been sitting on my shelf since its release. I skipped to the end, saw when the second book of the series would release, and promptly reshelved because I knew I wouldn't remember the plot of this book sufficiently enough to read and enjoy the second book. This was both good and bad: good because I didn't have to wait long to read the second book, Never a Gentleman; and bad because I cannot believe I let such a good book just sit there without cracking the spine! Olivia has secrets, oh, does she have secrets. They start to cave in on her almost immediately, which makes for an excellent suspense plot as the reader attempts to sort out what may be truth and what may be fiction. One point utterly shocked the heck out of me. I'm not sure how I didn't see it coming, but Olivia is a skilled and convincing liar. Along the way, we're introduced to Grace Fairchild (heroine of Never a Gentleman), who grew up all over the world, thanks to her father's various military campaigns, Lady Kate Gilbey (heroine of Always a Temptress), a "fallen" duchess, Bea, Lady Kate's companion, and various members of Drake's Rakes. This trilogy should have been called "The Graces" rather than Drake's Rakes; Lady Kate even makes a joke that she, Olivia and Grace all have 'grace' in their names. I really was sorry to see Barely a Lady end. Olivia, for all her necessary deceptions, is a strong and capable heroine, as Grace realizes when they go in search of Grace's father on the battlefield. I also liked that the historical timeline took place during the Napoleonic wars. I cannot wait to read the remaining novels in this trilogy, and I also hope there will be more to come.

Title: The Canary List Author: Sigmund Brouwer Publisher: Waterbrook Press The Canary List is a masterfully crafted, chilling, and thought-provoking story written by Sigmund Brouwer about a twelve-year old girl named Jaimie Piper who has no difficulty detecting evil in people. Jaime is a twelve-year old girl that has been in and out of foster homes since she was an infant. Due to her attitude and behavior she has been placed in classes for challenged students where she comes in contact with, teacher, Crockett Grey. Crocket has his on agenda in the beginning; he just wants to relive the anniversary of his daughter’s death. But that is not to be. Jaimie comes to him terrified and begging for his help which starts them on a downward spiral of bizarre events that leads them to the Vatican. I will definitely pass this book on to others with a recommendation for reading. Mr. Brouwer grabbed my attention and kept it throughout the book with his masterful crafting of the story web. The Canary List was provided by Waterbook Press free of charge for an honest review. The opinions in this review are my own.

Do yourself a favor. Get ahold of this book, sit down in a cozy chair and read the whole thing in one sitting. It shouldn't take more than an hour. Dillard will blow the top of your skull off and clean out the cobwebs in your soul. I keep mine on the "favorite books" shelf for just such Soul Spring-Cleaning occasions. Pulled it out last night to look for the section that describes what Holy the Firm means, and got distracted on the way... any book that makes me cry for joy and the pain of piercing beauty deserves six stars, if not its own constellation.

Guys, this sucked. I came across this book in one of my many trips to the library and thought it would be an interesting read. The synopsis promised a look at the motivations of terrorism through the lens of food! That sounds cool, right? No. All the food metaphors were so poorly written and clunky. Like they were just thrown in there haphazardly, because oh, I set out to correlate food and terrorism. Right. I quit over halfway through. I could have finished it on the bus ride I took it on, but I just...blech. Couldn't. I would like an interesting book/movie on this topic. I'm always disappointed (See also: my viewing experience with Paradise Now).

This book shows ways to add in bits of "telling" description here and there so that it doesn't bog down your story. The advice is based on the premise that a story should be balanced between action and description, between showing and telling. It does a good job of explaining both how and why.
