This book is pretty funny (dated, but funny). But the author's tragic life story (told at a section at the end of the book) is a jarring contrast to the contents of the book itself.

I didn't like this one as much as An Abundance of Katherines, partially because the tone was much darker, and also partially because I've gotten sick of reading about girls as mysterious and unfathomable creatures whose irrational acts propel the action of the book forward. This is an unkind evaluation of this book, which is actually quite nuanced, and, like "Katherines," has well-crafted and interesting characters. The author depicts teenagers as riding on the edge of catastrophe, which felt very honest and accurate. The book also got into themes of personal accountability, blame, and forgiveness and mostly handled the issues with a light hand. In the end, though, this was very much a book about a boy's infatuation with a girl and the obsessive tunnel-vision that infatuation gave him. That was the point, and yet, I am tired of perceiving girls through male eyes.

This book was really interesting and a great read for those who love literature because of the comparisons between some of the great works of fiction and real life. Some very interesting criticisms of Nabokov, Fitzgerald, Austen, and more accompany and are intertwined in this story of the life and hardships of women in Iran. It was a really eye-opening experience for me, very real and moving.

This book was a completely wonderful surprise. I expected yet another book that superficially explores the consequences of September 11th on human psyche and emotions, even though not enough time has passed for an adequate assessment of either. Instead, The Reluctant Fundamentalist diverted from the usual less-than-sincere tear-jerking first-hand accounts (cue sad music here) and provided a much more profound and subtle look at the suspicions everyone has but not everyone voices (harkens to scenes in the film Crash). The novel reaches an understated climax in the last few pages and instead of being left in a "are you kidding me? that's how the book is going to end? no closure at all?" state of mind, you are left with the same suspicions that haunted the main characters themselves.
