sapphy
Helen Hassall sapphy — I didn't like this one as much as An Abundance of Katherines, partially because the tone was much darker, and also partially because I've gotten sick of reading about girls as mysterious and unfathomable creatures whose irrational acts propel the action of the book forward. This is an unkind evaluation of this book, which is actually quite nuanced, and, like "Katherines," has well-crafted and interesting characters. The author depicts teenagers as riding on the edge of catastrophe, which felt very honest and accurate. The book also got into themes of personal accountability, blame, and forgiveness and mostly handled the issues with a light hand. In the end, though, this was very much a book about a boy's infatuation with a girl and the obsessive tunnel-vision that infatuation gave him. That was the point, and yet, I am tired of perceiving girls through male eyes.

benjaminjab47a
Benjamin Harvey benjaminjab47a — There are some books that are profound and convoluted and you have to plod through to make any sense of them. And then there are books that seem so easy at one level but leave you with a dozen thoughts to chew on. I'd file Things Fall Apart in the latter category. There is a line in the book about how the art of conversation among the Igbo tribe is highly valued and "proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten." Achebe captures this sentiment perfectly through the beautiful metaphors and allegories in the book. You understand that the practice of dialogue is really lost to modern society while being preserved by "primitive" society.

med007
Med Graphique med007 — Pam's choice for book club. This book covers the story of 3 generations of women... grandmother to granddaughter. The grandmother's story is very compelling. Traded off as a concubine to a warlard, she had to literally bribe people to steal her own child away from the warlord's wife after his death. I couldn't put it down. The daughter's story covers the span when China was becoming a communist country and all the ridiculous things that were done to people that destroyed their economy. This span of time in the book was not as intersting to me and got old real quick and then goes on to cover the story of the grand-daughter. The last 2/3rds of the book aren't quite as good as the first part. The culture is interesting though..
