Very different from his Alex Cross series, this book focuses on a young woman and her imaginary friend who turns up again later in her life. While it was predictable, it was certainly enjoyable and I cried through much of the book. There were several elements of chick lit here as well, which is rather surprising.

This book was definitely written with a movie adaptation in mind. Every chapter is a scene unto itself. Not a bad thing, by any means. The book moves really fast. If you like science fiction, you will probably enjoy this.

One word to describe this book: Brutal

The resemblance of the storyline with Chetan's previous book (Five Point Someone) made the book pretty dull and almost predictable. This book very simply leaves you depressed. Don't just follow the herd...give this one a miss!

Was interested in seeing why this book was chosen for the HBO series. In contrast to most war histories, this book is interesting for focusing on a single company through WWII. Now I see why E "Easy" Company (506th Reg, 101st Airborne Div) was chosen. It took part in many major allied campaigns: Normandy/Overlord, Holland/Market Garden, and Ardennes/Battle of the Bulge. The demanding training regimen of a despised training officer prepared them well for the campaigns, and their excellent fitness, high morale, good preparation and training in infantry tactics, allowed Easy Company to often defeat superior German forces despite being outnumbered, sometimes substantially. This book pays homage to the idea that the most valuable weapon in the military is the soldier himself. Easy Company are representatives of highly trained infantry soldiers in the US Army at that time that did not shy at combat missions. The book gives a good feel for the ebb and flow of being in a major combat sector, to being in the front line in an inactive sector, to being in reserve, to being rotated out of combat. One also gets a good feel for how good men can freeze in combat and the difficulties of leadership under fire while watching half of your company become casualties. Officers were often inferior to the NCOs they commanded, and promotions were not always merit-based. One also gets a sense for some of the senseless ways people were killed- car accidents, accidental firings of German pistols collected as souvenirs, failing to properly identify yourself to friendlies, etc. It is also a bit shocking to hear the open and widespread acceptance of looting of civilian property by the American army, even by officers. There are also anecdotes from eyewitnesses of soldiers participating in war crimes that go unpunished such as murdering surrendered soldiers or civilians. A very good taste of company life in the WW II American Army.

Fun read-aloud YA SF. Better when it's focused on dystopia and the evils of social control and eugenics. The romance got a little bit mushy cheese-food. Overall, however, Condie is fantastic with voice, tone, timbre, and subtle yearnings; she makes very real the transformation of a young woman's consciousness from naive to excited to quietly horrified and finally to heroically determined. Most certainly liked it well enough to read the next one when it comes out.

You know you read an amazing book when after a week you still keep thinking about certain moments or feelings you experienced while reading it. Rothfuss has created both a world and characters that I want to be a part of and meet in person. The depth of the main character is as deep of a character as I've read and I know we've just scratched the surface. The decision on how to unfold the story is fantastic and the writing quality is a pleasure on the mind to read. I can see why both him and Sanderson are sweeping the fantasy world like a storm.

In the future life is powered by machines and corporations. It’s not how hard you work, but how much you have and how beautiful you are that makes the world take notice. In an attempt to tip the scales Anya and her best friend Leticia ban together to steal back items and return them to their rightful owners. Of course, with an incentive for themselves, but the life is more rewarding than the alternative. When they’re approached by the impossible, an Elven trio, with the job of a lifetime against a mega-corporation that has ruined many it takes only moments to make the decision to help, but is it the right decision? And in the end who’s heart will be on the line, Anya’s or her new love Nin? So, first things first. I’m not a huge fan of self-publishing. I’ll just get that out there. You may be surprised, because next month I’ll be featuring some self-published titles. A lot of the reason I generally don’t care for them is the lack of editing and overall poor story development. Well, I have to honestly say I was pleasantly surprised by The Other Side of Life. Not only was it extremely well edited, but the plot was more well written than some house published books I’ve read. Truly, this was an incredible fantasy novel and a series I’m hoping Jess C. Scott keeps up with, because she’s obviously extremely talented. Much of the story actually reminded me of a blend of popular dystopian novels set in a futuristic “Blade Runner” style setting, which was incredibly cool. What was different though was the introduction of the fantasy element through Tolkien-style elves. Going into it I honestly had no idea what to expect with the “cyberpunk” genre attached to it, but it made for something I’d never experienced on a whole which was fantastic. It wasn’t as if there were elves romping around constantly or elaborate descriptions like typical fantasy books, but a complete blending of the two with superb editing to make enjoyable for younger readers especially. A fantasy novel with technology, something I’ve never read before, but truly enjoyed. As for the characters, I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them actually. Nin was probably my favorite, most likely because he was an elf and had a unique way of interacting with Anya in particular. What I liked especially was how Scott explained Anya and Nin’s romance, which developed rather quickly over just a days time. Normally I would have rolled my eyes at such an immediate attraction, but she wrote it in such a way that it seemed natural because of the magic surrounding the elves. In addition, each of the supporting characters, from Tavia to Leticia were also likable and well written. Fantasy readers who love technology will not want to miss The Other Side of Life by Jess C. Scott. Blending the world of the elves with an almost dystopian type setting in the human world creates a unique story that has rarely been written so well. With characters you quickly connect with and an incredibly fast moving storyline this is a book that readers will devour and be left waiting for the next in the series. Join Anya and Nin on a journey into the impossible and be prepared to be shocked by how stunning this new series truly is. Originally reviewed & copyrighted on my site, There's A Book.

It is 1721. Twelve-year-old Sophie Loveridge's father has always been a dreamer. Due to his refusal to be practical, the family has never had much money, and so they have lived at the home of Sophie's wealthy uncle, who is a merchant involved in the fish trade. Every summer, ships he owns are sent to New-Found-Land, in the New World, where there is abundant fishing. Sophie's father decides if he can go on an adventure, he can write a book and become famous like the author of Robinson Crusoe. But his dream changes Sophie's life when her father decides his wife and daughter must come along on his New World adventure. He decides they will travel on one of the fishing ships - and when fall comes and the ship returns to England, they will stay behind and spend the winter in the wilderness. Sophie doesn't want to leave England. She hates life on the ship and when they arrive in New-Found-Land she is frightened by such a lonely and desolate place. She becomes happier during the summer as she makes a few friends - the wives of two of the fishermen, an old fisherman who keeps an eye out for Sophie, and the old man's grandson. But when winter comes and almost everyone leaves Sophie is unperepared for how cold and hungry and lonely the winter will be. This book wasn't really one of my favorite Dear Canada books. I still enjoyed it somewhat, but I found it slow moving at times, and not as interesting as some of the other books. The character was likable but her family was rather strange and hard to relate to. I would recommend it to readers who are interested in this time period or who want to read all the Dear Canada books but if you are new to the series I would suggest starting with one of the others - my favorites are The Death of My Country, Banished From Our Home, and With Nothing But Our Courage.
