Some of the most beautiful use of the English language I have ever read. I would read certain passages or sentences over and over because they were so lovely. This book was hard for me to read in terms of the subject matter, as this man, and father lay dying, so close to my own father's death. But it made me wonder what memories are made of and what things are important and replayed in the mind at the end. For a small book, it had a huge impact.

Mark Steel is a well known left wing comedian in the UK. He appears on BBC Radio 4 (his lecture series is excellent) and is well known on the 'alternative' comedy circuit. This book is a memoir of what its like growing up in the UK and reaching a politically aware age as a socialist when the whole country appears to turn its back on socialist ideals and to embrace Thatcherite monetarism. Leaving school Mark works his way through a series of dead end jobs where he fails miserably to hold his tongue when people glibly comment on politics. He lives in a squat and various council flats while living through a rapidly changing world. As an insider account of the various events which shaped the left wing it is by turns funny, touching and infuriating. The ability of the left to writhe and beat itself senseless rather than take on the right wing is the source for much of the humour. The tragic events that occured on some of the demos (such as the killing of Blair Peach) form the sad moments, and the rise of New Labour is the source of the fury. A great book. I read the second half pretty much in one day as I travelled from Cambridge to Shrewsbury and back. A good way to pass the time...

Todd Spigot has finally saved enough money to leave his planet of Deadrock. At least temporarily. He will be on the maiden yoyage of the ship Star Fall, a joint project between the Terran and Morapn races. Formerly enemies, the Terrans and Morapns are using the Star Fall to issue in a new co-operative era between all species in the Galaxy. So Todd goes to a Body Parlour, "rents" a new cloned body and leaves his own body there to be clained in eight months when he returns from the first voyage of the Star Fall. (Cloning bodies and changing brains from one body to another are quite common in this futre era). Of course, when Tood boards the Star Fall, he soon finds himself mixed up in a confusing and dangerous series of events. For there are those who do NOT want peace between Terrans and Morapns--and they have an agenda of their own. I debated btween two and three stars but the rushed ending settled me on two stars. There are a few interesting ideas here and some bits of good writing. There is also some odd writing, and a convuluted plot. Written in 1980 and as far as I know not reprinted. A qucik, midly interesting read which many will forget two weeks after reading it. Recommended for the very patient Sf reader.

Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table is a food memoir written by Ruth Reichl, former editor of Gourmet magazine, about her youth and her journey toward being an influential contributor toward gourmet food in America. I thought this book was very so-so. There are some very interesting chapters and her overall journey is interesting, if not amazing. Truly, she did not grow up with a food pedigree or even a knowledge/desire to do what she does which I think is remarkable and makes me wonder if that is as possible in our day and age as it seems to have been in the past. However, the book is also kind of boring and her writing about growing up with a manic-depressive mother was exhausting. Also, and this really has not too much to do with the book, but it seems like Reichl is America's sweetheart when it comes to food and I just don't get it. Reading the book did not solidify in my mind exactly why that might be.

A twist I wasn't expecting, I really enjoyed seeing the unique world Carey has created through a man's eyes. I also enjoyed the new perspective of not only a traitor's son, but from a man decended from a different part of the world in the novel. Another book I could not put down with many unexpected twists.
