The perfect book. A poem of devastation. As close to war as anyone not personally facing the barrel of a gun will ever come.

Richard Newman is a badass of a poet - brutal at times, always elegant. The bleak midwestern landscape of his hometowns, where even the ditches have names, are a perfect backdrop for his sad and funny poems. The boy can work himself some meter, too. Favorite poems include his monster sonnets, which expose the existential angst of your favorite matinee movie idols, including Mothra ("Let's face it, I make a shitty monster").

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Anthology This was a very solid anthology; there was only one story I found disappointing - all the rest of them I liked very much. None of them have made me run out and buy one of the author's novels, although I'm now seriously considering picking up _Nobody's Princess_ by Esther Friesner. Her short story, "Thunderbolt" is about a young Helen of Troy when she was a princess of Sparta. This Helen is the least wimpy and superficial Helen I've ever run across. She's spoiled and willful, but I liked her very much, and found myself wondering why she would come to engineer the Trojan war (for I am very sure this Helen was not a pawn in that game). The novel apparently continues Helen's story. There is a strong non-European influence to many of the stories; one is set in pre-Colombian Americas, another during the British occupation of India in the 19th century, and a third in an African country during Rome's expansionist period.

Amazing. I read this slowly over the course of nearly two years (or, more precisely, in fits of entrenched excitement separated by long stretches of time when I felt unable to crack open a novel...to do so would have been irresponsible, or would have required too much time and personal effort...a sad state of affairs, I know...I hope I'm past that now.) At any rate, this book rewards the sporadic reader, making the long-term commitment really pay off. Someday I hope to reread it and find equal delight in the short-term fling.

I studied this play for my Leaving Cert English exam and we used to read the whole thing aloud and the only amusing about the play was the chicken noises which I got to make while reading aloud. I found it slow and hard to just read. Now, if we were asked to act it, it's a whole other story!

I feel like this book had a sweet spot. Beyond the Zero was a bit of a chore, but after you got through that first section, the narration really took shape and the characters sort of fell in to place. Pynchon's prose are really beautiful and deserve the hype they receive. It sort of petered off at the end.. then again, maybe it was just me losing interest.

All of McCullough's books that I've read so far have been engrossing, but this one was especially so because its focus was my most beloved city - Paris. He focused on the many Americans who traveled to and lived in Paris from 1830 through 1900 and distilled their copious correspondence into an engagin history of the era. He organized the chapters around various interests (e.g. art, medicine) or events (e.g. the Paris Commune, the various World Expositions), but the overall tone of the book was almost as if he was wandering around Paris and mentioning observations called to mind by the various streets and monuments. Even the end notes were interesting. Of course, someone not enamored of Paris might not be so engaged by the book, but I loved it.

I am drawn, perhaps unnaturally, to books involving fairy tales and the like, and this was a fun adult version of a fairy tale / coming of age story. It's a quick read (a one nighter), and a good distraction if you're bored...

Twice tried, twice failed. The language is punchy, situations are cute at best. The first two chapters move quickly and ask for the readers investments. I found no reason to pay anything forward.

Amusing, but not particularly helpful--or the sort of thing you want to look at more than once. If anything, set it out as something for your guests to look at. If each is entertained for two minutes by her mixture of recipes, etiquette refreshers, and pictures of herself engaging in illegal activity...well, it'll distract them while you get the real hostessing done.
