An entertaining adventure story, full of rich historical detail and unexpected plot twists. Will likely make an entertaining film. On the other hand,the title character is fairly conventional if not old-fashioned (a virtuous but naive young man with more scruples than sense) and his transformation (SPOILER into a master of strategy late in the book END SPOILER) is not fully convincing. But it was a fun ride, and I learned a great deal about late 18th century Japan, the Dutch East India Company, and the state of the medical art at the time.

Fanatically, obsessively plotted and structured. Completely morally terrifying. And sometimes searingly funny in the midst of the very bleak Reagan-era political world it occupies. Like a whole strain of great, great authors of the 20th century, Moore takes an encyclopedic knowledge of the entire history of his medium and genre and uses it to mow down his predecessors--not by bettering them, but by blowing them up into their ultimate, horrifying or ridiculous conclusions. So we get the fascist implications of depending on masked vigilantes, we get the insane hypocrisy of the prudery grafted onto comic books by censors, all the hilarious and creepy freudian and queer subtexts in comics (like Batman and Robin, say), and beyond all of that we get the insanity of nuclear brinksmanship that tainted 50 years of culture and politics, and the even greater insanity of what it looked like it might have taken to break its hold on us. I know this is over the top. But dear lord, the amount of talent and planning put into this very big comic book novella is really daunting.

** spoiler alert ** Reading this book you get a readers digest version of U.S. history. Some of the "miracles" are questionable, especially where the case was made that Regan's living through his assassination attempt "saved America." In this book the author admonished anyone who believed that the U.S. wast the greatest nation on earth must also believe that if this is true it is only to the extent that it should benefit all nations, meaning "to whom much is given, much is required."

I really wanted to like this book, but ultimately it was just okay. I found the use of present tense sometimes odd, when obviously all of this occurred in the past. The constant now just felt strange. The writing meandered around and didn’t really have any story or a direction, which quite frankly does remind me of travelling. There were a few chapters that were done differently than the rest of the book, such as one as several letters to a friend. That was okay, I liked how it was broken up. Some parts of the book read better than others, mainly because those felt like something was going on. Often the author writes about what she is reading and goes into some details, background, and provides quotes, and this should be very interesting since the books are about the place, but ultimately it wasn't. I doubt any real passages or scenes will really stick with me, with the exception of the Scotland chapter. Mayes and her husband share a house with some old friends and there were some good moments in the chapter, this is about the only one I really enjoyed. In the end, maybe she just wrote about too many places in the book. Too many places it all blended together.
